Kilkerran single casks are not very common. This year, a few came out to mark the 15th anniversary of the distillery's commissioning.
This Port Wood Single Cask got some wood and cork for my taste.
    • Nose
      87 87
A hint of raspberry syrup blowing from the glass. Tree resin. Freshly barked branches. Milk chocolate. The distillery character is hidden behind the port.
Milk chocolate, caramel. Juniper berries, cranberry juice.
    • Taste
      86 86
Soft start with a high proportion of wood. Cork taint. Sweet raspberries, strawberry jam. Clay soil, mushrooms. Wood and cork are very dominant and season well. Peppermint candy, a little liquorice.
    • Finish
      86 86
Dry and spicy finish, in which sweet fruit along with wood and cork are still the key. Menthol.

In light of all the mentions of moldy wood and cork notes, I was really worried going in, because that's pretty much my kryptonite. Turns out this wasn't as bad as expected, but it's still pretty unbalanced, overly sweet and dominated by the cask.
    • Nose
      86 86
Typical long-term port maturation nose, with raspberries and old oak, but also a musty, damp-cellar aspect. Curiously, the smoke appears to have been almost completely drowned out by the cask(s) – at least the Springbank 17 Madeira that I had beforehand seemed a lot more smoky to me. The only thing that's left is a kind of tomato-based barbecue sauce / smoke paprika feel, which is certainly fun, but also easily to be had in other and cheaper bottlings. I believe I'm also getting a mineral aspect, but it's hard to tell because the wood is so dominant.
    • Taste
      85 85
Heavy marmelade-type sweetness, plums and figs and damp old oak. I wouldn't go so far as to call it scruffy or moldy, but it's certainly not a malt you can have just any day of the week. A late-night, end-of-the-evening, once-a-month kind of whisky, if you ask me, with a bit too much wood and jammy port.
    • Finish
      85 85
Dark chocolate, morello cherry and smoked bacon. Still super sweet.

Tasted after the DK and IT release.
As for the italian release, this one is more rough and slightly unbalanced. Good whisky though.
    • Nose
Leather, nuts, raisons, hints of red berries, tobacco, chocolate, damp earth.
    • Taste
Leathery, ashy, oaky, peppery. A red berries sweetness in the background. A touch of caramel. Mentholated and oaky notes.
With water, more creamy, hints of oranges.
    • Finish
Long, drying, spicy. Lingering earthy notes.

    • Nose
      88 88
Caramel, honey, cranberries, raspberry syrup, wax, almonds, mineral, a hint of mildew, mandarins
    • Taste
      85 85
Forest berries, slightly moldy plums, raspberries, dark chocolate, walnuts, black pepper, allspice, liquorice
    • Finish
      86 86
Walnuts, dark chocolate, slightly drying, spicy, wood, liquorice

Third of the evening after the editions for Taiwan and Austria.

Here the keg does a bit of anything. It is unbalanced, and a rubber frame just spoils everything ...
    • Nose
      87 87
Particular nose, fully on the port.
      Nuts, rancio, camphor. Almonds.
      Some fruits: blueberry, redcurrant.
Big oily leather. Tobacco, dates, figs. Chocolate. Slightly burnt caramel. Spices, cinnamon.
    • Taste
      85 85
In the mouth it is almost too round.
Leather, rubber, black fruit (berries, blackberry, blueberry).
      Prunes, dates, figs, almonds, nuts.
      Caramel still burned.
      Wet wood. Cigarette butt.
    • Finish
      87 87
Long finish on leather, wood, varnish. The rubber note from the mouth happily disappeared.
      Dark chocolate, dark fruit, liquorice.

    Nose:
A great aroma! You notice the influence of the port wine barrel with sweet dried fruit and chocolate. A fine oak note runs like a veil over the malt and I also notice a slight mineral note, which quickly fades away. Vanilla and roasted aromas give the nose the final kick.

    Taste:
Also in the mouth you have the dark fruits first, especially raisins and plums. The chocolate note is now getting a little darker, almost bitter. Citrus notes provide a bit of freshness, caramel and spices round off the taste profile.

    Outlet:
Creamy and long-warming with dark chocolate.

To me this Kilkerran was pretty two-faced. The port influence is pretty obvious with loads of raspberries, young strawberrie and other red berries under a layer of sweet vanilla and cream. Midpalate it turns musty, moldy and farmy which makes think Kilkerran and port are not the best marriage. But perhaps it’s just me not really digging the Kilkerran profile.

  15. DerDennis! scored this whisky 85 points Specialist

I like the whisky in terms of smell, but I don't find it very complex. The taste is too woody and a little too spicy for me.
The long finish then becomes quite neat again, whereby it gets a bit too bitter and finally stale for me.

Phew difficult. I didn't like it the first time I tried it. Now I knew that it takes time and water. I really liked it today. The smell and the finish are great, but not a daily dram! Already special and I'm looking forward to having another sip. Good second chance!
    • Nose
      89 89
Color: amber, with a slight red tinge
Nose: Heavy juicy sweetness (dates, dark grapes, blackberries). Wet barrel, which is a bit moldy.
    • Taste
      87 87
Dark berries and grapes. Again this heavy sweetness, then it becomes dry and bitter and musty. When I swallow down I think of a heavy red wine.
    • Finish
      91 91
After the second large sip, the heavy, fruity sweetness remains. The whisky remains like red wine: dry and slightly bitter. The finish is quite long with very dark chocolate. Delicious!

Phew, it takes time in the glass and you have to deal with that. For my taste it got a lot of wood, but a little water brings out the fruity-sweet aromas better. It gets better and better in the glass over time, but you still have to like the dominant wood.

PS Reminds me a little of the cheaper Mackmyra Bark (WID: 120405), only without smoke.
    • Nose
      86 86
the winey aromas from the port are directly present in the nose; fruity sweetness of red fruits; raspberries; strawberries; Chocolate; with clear notes of sawdust; tree resin
    • Taste
      84 84
      soft in the beginning; a lot of fresh wood is present; Cork; sweet and spicy; raspberries; strawberries;
    • Finish
      83 83
dry; spicy; fruity and sweet; some mint; tender liquorice; woody notes

Uhh no It smells and doesn't taste good to me. Too much old moldy cellar and putrid barrel, paired with a nasty fish preserve note.
    Unfortunately not mine at all.
