Love. This. Stuff. Reminds me of the good old days of those stunning sherried Adelphi bottlings with bottling dates pre 2009.
    • Nose
Dirty sherry, earthy (peat) but still fresh and smooth. Frying fish in the nearby area. Chocolate, mocca, cinnamon, old leather, burnt orangepeel, soy sauce and beef stock, dry leaves.
    • Taste
Wonderful. Earthy sherry, the best coffee, rich and spicy. Hazelnutpraline, a good dark Casa Magna cigar. Dark bitter chocolate, plum liquor, mint, cloves, mocca, caramelized red apple and some orange, dark cherries. Soot. Maybe some sweet ginger in the distance.
    • Finish
Rich, soft and smooth. Smoked raisins, mocca, coffee and dark chocolate again, salt and orange liquor.

What an amazing color say, wow!
This is a very complex whisky, in which you constantly discover new aromas and flavors. A very deep taste!

Raisins, dark chocolate, sherry, peat, cured meat and dried fruit.
    • Taste
      94 94
Peat, sherry, salt, meat, raisins, peach, dark chocolate, caramel, red fruit, raisins, pepper and cinnamon. Can you imagine so many flavors coming together in 1 drink?
    • Finish
      93 93
Dried fruit, sherry, peat, dark chocolate, raisins, meat, salt, but also bastard sugar and caramel. The finish lingers for a long time.

    Arbroath Smokies

This single sherry hogshead of young Caol Ila was bottled for the 15th anniversary of WIN – Whisky Import Nederland – and yielded 295 bottles at cask strength. My buddy Marcel from Holland sent me a sample. And that’s a good thing too, for as you’ll soon find out, you’ll find this is another grand Caol Ila! The color, to say the least, is remarkable dark.

Grand, umami nose on roast beef, dried ham, lots of earthy notes, dried leaves, origin chocolate with a mildly spicy side (think cinnamon and pepper, but also oregano). Conspicuously devoid of sweetness, in my opinon. Arbroath Smokies, soya sauce, coffee grounds. Only after a few moments I get some hints of raisins and plums. Quite special, but Caol Ila is totally unrecognizable.

Surprisingly soft on the palate with a lovely creamy body. Immediately pretty peaty with sweet and sour notes, while a hint of plasticine and seaweeds takes your taste buds hostage. The spices are more outspoken now and next to pepper and cinnamon I also get some vanilla and cloves. Roasted hazelnuts, smoked fish, raw meat and rough sea salt. I am loving this to bits. The sweetness keeps you guessing, but midpalate some plum liqueur and brown sugar reveal itself. Again quite incognito.

The finish is extremely long, somewhat drying on salted meat and espresso. Candied orange peel at the death! That was fun.

Wow, what a ride. But those who claim to recognize Caol Ila are liars (I mean that in the nicest possible way). Nevertheless, the Vital Spark was just a tad better. Thx, Marcel!

Superb, very nice complex whisky. For such a young whisky full of taste and pure enjoyment.
    • Nose
Just perfect. The balance of the peat and the flavors is excellent. Spicy such as cinnamon, pepper, brown sugar. peat, oil. Very nice heavy nice combination.
    • Taste
Nice sweet tone in a tufted whisky. Nice balance and not too heavy. Sweet, cinnamon, vanilla, caramel (brown sugar), dark chocolate, dried fruit, meaty and salty, roasted nuts, sherry bomb. Haribo peaches.
    • Finish
Will last a long time. Flavors remain constant. Instant bottle kill!

    • Nose
On the nose, this whisky has some peat in it. It is sweet and fruity, smells of raisins, chocolate, sherry, brine, bacon, old leather and orange and red fruit.
    • Taste
The scents blend seamlessly into the taste, but in the palette also clearly earthy hints, a very thick box of sherry! Something like cigar boxes, coffee, cherries, something maritime and I noticed that it contains more peat in terms of taste than the nose suggests.
    • Finish
The finish of this whisky is great. It is long and warming and a lot of flavor lingers. Especially the salty meat, sherry and chocolate will stay with me for a long time.
