Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 1995 HI

Big and powerful. A Clynelish that just keeps on giving.

On the nose, lots of cough medicine and cream soda. Vanilla extract and orange notes are also present. With water, the waxiness intensifies and forms an immensely powerful and complex nose. Fresh green grass and a tad of broken-in high quality calf leather (Connolly leather in a Jaguar E-type) emerges. Notes of pepper can also be detected in the background. A Clynelish that resembles legendary Brora bottlings?! Old school indeed.

On the palate, full butter creamy goodness. Full-blown vanilla and oak sweetness with a side of pepper spice. Citrus and fresh lemonade also comes to the foreground. What a beast! Clynelish is famous for these profiles but they are rarely delivered with this much tenacity and intensity. With water and time, the oiliness and waxiness increases and engulfs your palate in its entirety. A cask that seems to have lots to give and rightfully shows its proper maturity.

The finish is long and leads with sweet cough medicine, orange and citrus notes, but then transitions to a drier medicinal finish towards the end.

The similarities between this and older Broras cannot be ignored. Unlike the current Clynelish 14, this is unapologetically representative of Clynelish's profile and outwardly complex and flavourful. This bottling surpassed my expectations in every way and I only hope there is more to come.

A quite unusual Clynelish. Bold and delicate at the same time. It would be a legendary bottle after a few years.

So very Clynelish! Very punchy, herbal, waxy, orchard fruits and citrus zest. And what a nice long finish!
