I met Mathew Thomson in 2019 and was intrigued by his innovative mindset and dedication to create an authentic New Zealand whisky. Manuka wood smoke is both singular and hard to describe, but it works. On the nose, heather honey, bay leaf and incense sticks mix with lime, rubber and distant campfire notes. Herbal-fresh and effervescent, the taste develops with menthol, grapefruit and well-integrated smoke. Licorice, peppermint tea and a touch of quality oak linger in the savory finish. This malt does not imitate Scotch, and that's refreshing to see!

Thanks to Peatbogger for this bizarre but brilliant sample. This is an acquired taste and you are either going to love it or hate it. You certainly won't forget it.

This reminds me of an old girlfriend's flat, she used to burn incense sticks all the time. It is very dominant but there is also liquorice root. You think, hold on this is unpleasant and then no it's not it's actually quite pleasant. Weird for sure, but that is good. The wood on the nose almost smells like sap from a chopped log.

I like this very much, dare I say it is unique. It is fresh and minty and salty. There is some fruit just it the background and it stays there and it works. This feels like it wants to be dry but it never gets there. There is some sweetness but it's more like brown sugar. There is some smoke notes as well, a lot going on.

Again the finish does not disappoint, much more of that liquorice root and even a touch of aniseed.
