    That shows the hut on the label Glenfarclas is no secret anymore;)

    In the nose a fresh lime note (fruit and peel) over a nicely balanced round red fruit sherry profile - I suspect a good 2ndFillfass - he is so smooth that he looks a little older than 18 - especially for a piglet. Significantly better than the sucked 18er OA. very tasty.

    The nose is just great. If you not only drink undiluted cask strength, he has enough power on the palate - but he is definitely a gentleman.

    The label and above all the taste leave almost no doubt, this Speyside region is my favorite distillery! Nutty, dried berries, a hint of citrus aromas and minimal smoke, this filling is extremely tasty and yummy! Certainly not a big bang, but with a really great PLV! I like it and I like it ...

    • Nose
      Dark caramel shines with a rusty shimmer in the Premium Snifter, on the glass wall stick tough streaks from which long and oily "legs" solve. Creamy roasted flavors in combination with ground hazelnuts rise, oranges blend with apricots and nectarines, citrus notes dissolve in spicy wood tones. Harmoniously harmonized, the gentle alcohol, the wonderful sherry aromas, raisins and currants merge with a hint of caramelized sugar to a sweet fruit mass. The roasted aromas become more intense, the creamy nose sensation increases, a hint of dried grapes and berries ends in sweet sugar and creamy toffee.
      Edit: With a new nose I discover peaches and apricots, wonderful!

      Gently, creamy nut tones and sun-ripened raisins unfold on the tongue at the first sip, spicy wood tones merge with zests of oranges and juicy tangerines, a touch of subtle sharpness tickles the tongue and stimulates the salivation. Oranges and apricots play together, tentative hints of grapefruit and other citrus fruit come into their own. With cedar wood and minimal smoke and tobacco blurring taste and aftertaste.

      Creamy and slightly astringent paste oranges and roasted hazelnuts on the palate, spicy wood tones end in dry and subtly bitter wood elements. The interplay between sweet, dark, dried fruit flavors and slightly tart notes of citrus and spicy wood stimulates the salivation even in the aftermath. Nutty, with a subtle hint of smoke, the finish sounds creamy and leaves slightly bitter wood tones on the tongue.

    [February, 2021] Another sample of an indy Glenfarclas...

    ...which comes from a refill of a sulphur-candle treated modern sherry cask (seasoned in the mid-eighties, most probably). The sulphurous off-notes are not that heavy anymore and less sensitive drinkers might even appreciate this additional strong flavour compound, but for sulphur-sensitive connoisseurs (like me) this is unpleasant, still.

      The colour is deep copper and the nose offers a slightly sulphurous modern sherry profile (you recognise modern sherry maturations by a slightly sour-winey nose and taste which stems from the young, unmatured wine used to season the casks). The sherry itself is fine as is the malt, so without the sulphurous off-notes this would have been a fine nose - would have been...

      The taste is sweet and very quaffable, the sulphur is not so much of a problem here unless you are very sensitive to it. Nonetheless this taste would be better without any sulphur, at least according to my taste buds. The modern sherry provides powerful flavours and the malt holds its head up, too. Water is not needed, it strengthens the sulphur only.

      The dram arrives warming and coating on the palate with a bitter-astringent mouthfeel which often comes along with sulphur-spoiled drams. The finish is long but turns more and more sulphurous, and it gets unpleasant now. This is (probably) okay if you do not own the sulphur gene (it is a 50 per cent chance in Europe to be equipped with it - I am, unfortunately). All others should shy away from this dram.

    The Glenfarclas-Chrackter can be seen well in this bottling. A real gentleman without lacking power. Tasty and tasty, although not very complex / exciting. For me much better than the 18y OA.

    Nose:
    Red fruit, old sherry, highlighted with orange. Citrus zest with covered spiciness, licorice. Everything set, you notice the age.

    Palate:
    Mild, very dignified, classic older Sherrymalt, relatively little sweetness, but fruitiness and spiciness. The alcohol fits very well here. Orange. Slight bitterness.
    Dark honey in the background. Very balanced. Could be older than 18 years. Nice interplay of flavors.

    finish:
    Long. Red fruit, seasoning, orange change.

    Very tasty drop, both fresh and fruity and oily at the same time.

    Tasted at The Roll Glass
    Nose: I like it straight away, great combination of fruit and caramel, despite the alcohol strength of 45.6 not a bit noticeable (and that at The Roll!), Red fruit, fresh strawberry, raspberry and peach cake, warm roasted almonds, just a little Seasoning, later also a hint of custard
    Taste: more clearly a piglet than in the nose, after the dark-fruity beginning the typical nutty spice strikes quickly, intense and relatively long, but significantly less dry than the OA of the same age, a little honey is included
    Finish: sounds much sweeter than usual with older piglets, I like the balance quite well, a hint of cocoa in the end, reasonably long according to age
    Conclusion: great drop that hits the 18yo OA by far, pleasing and exactly my prey scheme

    Glenfarclas 18yo 43% WID: 106453 Vs. Spesyide Region 2001/2019 45.6% Zanzibar WID: 141512

    The sherry is also there for the standard 18yo, but more subtle and brighter. Wood notes and nuts. Suggested cloves. Also floral notes and some citrus. In the mouth, unfortunately, a bit too tame and not very voluminous.

    The Zanzibar got more sherry and the fruits are redder. Overall, everything is darker than the standard 18yo. But Zanzibar also has some citrus notes. In addition, then in the mouth warm wood notes.

    The Sanisbar is a decent malt for the money. But I do not think I need a bottle of it.

    In the nose I find the standard 18er even more interesting. If only he had a few percent more. Something is missing in the mouth. Certainly there are many reused barrels. But somehow that's what makes it so interesting to me.

    I'm probably relatively alone with that opinion.
