Whisky Reviews for Aberfeldy 12-year-old

I like this austere style, and find it quite tasty. Not complex, and although young it is well matured, no funny wine casks or heavy finish. Just good old (young) Aberfeldy.
    • Nose
      85 85
Wine gums, ginger, pepper, runny honey, lemon, straw, grapes and apple. Water is good, but
    • Taste
      86 86
Spicy (ginger, white pepper), prickly, dry, chalky, lime, mineral, wine gums. Water makes it creamier/less spicy
    • Finish
      86 86
Chalky, sweet, grassy, wine gums, syrupy texture, loads of prickly spice. Does well with water.

Tried again bottle been open a few weeks now, with a little water everything opens up nicely (something that you cannot do with the standard 40% version), plenty of spice, lemon, orange and honey but it is a slightly manufactured taste , as if all the rough edges had been taken out, its good but a bit more life is needed for this to sing, a solid 87 -88 points for me as my final assessment for this bottle

I got this 3x20cl tasting pack which included the Craigellachie 13 & Aultmore 12 purely for the Aberfeldy as it was a one off 46%.
The extra 6% turbo charges this over the regular 40% 12 year and they are nothing more than distant cousins, this is leagues better.
If this is just a feeler by the owners to test reaction then I would gladly pay a fair price for 12 year 46% bottle.
    Excellent experiment
A very simple tasting note would be honey, orange, lemon & ginger biscuit being ever so slightly syrupy.

Honey, orange, menthol, like opening a shoe polish box, with sweet barley sugar notes , warm biscuit and a hint of spice.
Ginger snap biscuits emerge after a minute or so.
    • Taste
      90 90
Creamy and spicy with plenty of fruit, a little honey and very faint hints of lime but the fruit is mainly, orange with a little mango.
The mouthfeel is slightly syrupy and the spice seems to increase but it is actually being propelled along by the appearance of some peat which is welcome.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long, spicy, peaty and vibrant, really excellent

This bottle is unusual as it is 46% and not the usual 40% It will be interesting to see if Aberfeldy up the strength for their general 12 year release but somehow I doubt it?

Part of a John Dewar 2019 Discovery set along with 20cl of Aultmore 12 year and Craigellachie 13 year.
