Great nose. Great in the mouth. The finish is a bit flat for what has been experienced before.
    • Nose
The 59% carry a lot of aroma. Great like that.
apricot ahead. Then orange. A slight sweetness from maple syrup. Light herbal notes. Then the sherry cask slowly emerges with plums and spices. A slight acidity resonates. Cinammon. Chocolate. Coffee.
    • Taste
A lot of dark fruit. cherry ahead. It is accompanied by cinnamon and pepper. Sticky sweetness lines the mouth. Orange. Lots of wood. Coffee. Nut.
    • Finish
medium length Orange. Wood. Subtle milk chocolate.

The single malt a'bunadh does not have any age information. It is not chilled and filled in batches with their natural cask strength. The maturation takes place exclusively in Oloroso Sherry Butts.
    • Nose

Intense with spices, pralines and flavored oranges.

Unfortunately, a lot of alcohol spiciness, 59.0 vol% is also quite a bit, but I know many other whiskys that integrate this amount of alcohol better and softer. This whisky numbs the mouth when drunk undiluted.

Otherwise great aroma with unfortunately not much taste behind it.
    • Nose
      86 86
Great spices and a lot of sherry smell, apricots and a little cinnamon.
    • Taste
      71 71
Unfortunately not much left of the taste, as the alcohol numbs the mouth. Diluted to drinking strength (approx. 46% by volume) with water, it loses all taste.
    • Finish
      78 78
Moderate numbness on the mucous membranes

I have reviewed this whisky on a standalone basis, not in comparison with other batches. So less or more sherry may be relevant for the hardcore fans of a'bunadh, but not for me.

The verdict is that this is a mediocre whisky. I wouldn't serve this to guests/friends. It is way too bitter and actually not that complex.
    • Nose
      82 82
I do get an association with bourbon when smelling this a'bunadh, as it is rather wood driven on sawdust and baking spice. This is funny for a whisky that stayed in oloroso sherry butt's...
Yet there is more to detect: apricot jam, prune, a hint of leather book cover. It' a bit earthy/leafy on coffee and tobacco leaf.
    • Taste
      71 71
Quite powerful in the start, but getting tannic quite soon. Some ground coffee, cooked plum and apricot to start, but pepper, ginger and musty oak take over quite soon. Gets really bitter on grape pip.
Quite some water helps a little to egde off the sharp edges, but it doesn't bring much improvement otherwise.
    • Finish
      76 76
Orange zest, grape pip, a lot of oak and ginger.

After the first sip, blackberries and strawberries
    • Taste
Artificial cherry flavor, honey, lemon, dried fruits, chocolate, nuts, wood

Sadly the Aberlour Abunadh series is getting lighter with every batch. Hey Aberlour people - what is happening? Did you forget to leave some sherry in the cask...?

  19. Dre73 scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

H2H with batch 66: Nose very close to each other, only 65 has a litte more chocolate. In taste 66 has some licorice flavors. Both very intense fruity drams though, very pleasant.
    • Nose
Fruity, strong alcohol, a lot of red fruits, berries, raisins, some milk chocolate. Intense nose.
    • Taste
Strong, pickering, pepper, intense. A lot of red fruit, berries, forest fruits, then some chocolate.
    • Finish
Still powerful and intense, very fruity, a lot of red fruits, some honey, long finish.

    Sherry lightly marked in color
A note of wood then arrives directly the dried fruits, I found the alcohol rather well integrated contrary to what I can read below. Little by little we arrive at orange and a little apricot

In bouchen we still arrive on dried fruits and a hint of apricot a little more persistent
A saline side stands out slightly

The finish is long and appreciable.

A good, no-frills sherry, not complex but very good. 88/100

Not the best, not the worst. Pretty young.
Good whisky to start a flight with. Not enough value for money. Still a decent dream!

The nose is rather stale and medicinal. The sherry cask influence also comes through.
The alcohol is rather high and not very well integrated. However, the taste is fairly rich and fruity.
    Finish is medium long.

It’s a dram to start with, I am big fan of the sherry whiskies, every time when I tried drinking this after a sherries whisky I was dissatisfied. There is just no sherry or a very limited amount of sherry to be found in this dram. My guess is that this is a very young one and has been bottled too early.
    • Finish
      77 77
Strong cheap alchohol flavour, the taste that you expect when drinking a $30 bottle, not a $70 dollar one. All in all disappointing bottle

Batch 65 is by far the worst batch i have tasted. Indeed there is spice but some important part is missing.... Sherry. Batch 60 / 61 were in my opinion the best batches so far in the 60 range. 60/61 are close to perfection

  29. Collegiate scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

A part of the downward trend of batches in recent years for me. This is the worst batch I’ve had yet. It has all the spiciness one would expect from an Abunadh, but I found the other fuller sherried notes one expects largely vacant, like the casks used for this batch were very tired. Also, elements of being younger and rougher than other batches. Sadly took a while for me to work through this bottle.
