Whisky Reviews for Aberlour A'bunadh batch #65

- Batch 65 is by far the worst batch i have tasted. Indeed there is spice but some important part is missing.... Sherry. Batch 60 / 61 were in my opinion the best batches so far in the 60 range. 60/61 are close to perfection
- Alcohol noticeable and not well integrated.
- A part of the downward trend of batches in recent years for me. This is the worst batch I’ve had yet. It has all the spiciness one would expect from an Abunadh, but I found the other fuller sherried notes one expects largely vacant, like the casks used for this batch were very tired. Also, elements of being younger and rougher than other batches. Sadly took a while for me to work through this bottle.
- I have reviewed this whisky on a standalone basis, not in comparison with other batches. So less or more sherry may be relevant for the hardcore fans of a'bunadh, but not for me.
The verdict is that this is a mediocre whisky. I wouldn't serve this to guests/friends. It is way too bitter and actually not that complex.
I do get an association with bourbon when smelling this a'bunadh, as it is rather wood driven on sawdust and baking spice. This is funny for a whisky that stayed in oloroso sherry butt's...
Yet there is more to detect: apricot jam, prune, a hint of leather book cover. It' a bit earthy/leafy on coffee and tobacco leaf.
Quite powerful in the start, but getting tannic quite soon. Some ground coffee, cooked plum and apricot to start, but pepper, ginger and musty oak take over quite soon. Gets really bitter on grape pip.
Quite some water helps a little to egde off the sharp edges, but it doesn't bring much improvement otherwise.
Orange zest, grape pip, a lot of oak and ginger.
