As is often the case with rum casks, it is a bit special. Here after 10 years, they downright transferred it into bourbon refill, the barrel must be damn felt.

Can be liked or hated depending on everyone's taste. I am in between.
    • Nose
      85 85
Very particular nose, light rubber at the start.
Then with aeration: plum, walnuts, walnut peel.
Dry wood, caramel, very dark fir honey.
Eucalyptus. A little deodorant for toilet ...
      It is very resinous.
We evolve on more wood, smoke. The tree goes to the barbecue.
    • Taste
      86 86
In the mouth we keep the initial rubber side.
      Glue, solvent.
      Dry young wood, rosemary.
      Cold ash, barbecue, slightly meaty.
Ricola, eucalyptus, aromatic herbs. A little violet, pink.
    • Finish
      88 88
Long finish on cold smoke, tobacco, light peat. Medicinal and fresh, with a nice dose of liquorice. The wood is discreet which makes this finish very pleasant.

I'll never be friends with heavy port influence in whisky, and this one also showed too much grape skin bitterness.

Heavy port wine notes, totally dominating. Fermented grapes, sweet wine. Light toffee, raisins, green apple, cherry jam, very sweet honey. Really hard to nose past the port.
    • Taste
      75 75
Good alcohol level, very smooth. Great texture. Good dose of cane sugar and apple juice, and then clear notes of bitter grape skins. Portwine flavours also very clear. Second chew is better with ripe plums, more sweetness, but I can't get rid of those grape skins, and there is some acetone as well. Toffee, christmas cake, sherried macarons. I just keep struggling with the grape skins, as they are not integrated at all. A real shame, because otherwise the port notes are manageable, balance in the rest of the flavours is good, and so is the structure. Light sulphur now also shows up, both in the mouth and the nose. Third chew is drier, but still very sweet, and still grape skins all over. Some mint, and light ginger also.
    • Finish
      73 73
Warm, light peppers, quite sweet. Grape skins dominate everything, sulphur is a bit down, but still there. Basically lingering notes are sweet, sulphur, bitter grape skins, and port wine. Not good enough.

Dry and almost dusty in the nose, there is actually nothing sweet, tart, spicy and medicinal. Betadine?
In addition, there are light aromas of raisins and very little brown sugar. The alcohol is rather strong and pungent, that is not so well integrated.
In the mouth it remains quite medicinal with light smoke and a strong betadine aroma. In addition, gum, burnt wood, and behind it some sweet, caramelized plums and raisins and candied sugar. The alcohol is less pungent, I still wouldn't say "soft", but better than the nose.
The finish is long with light smoke, wood, a little glue and pepper. Overall, that's more pleasant than this description sounds, it's an interesting game of sweet and medicinal.

Special dram, not bad but a sample is enough for me.

Those active port casks can be tricky. The finish in bourbon cask was a wise decision. It could have been sickening but it tamed the whisky. I enjoyed a welcome sharpness.
Not my preferred profile but good whisky though.
    • Nose
Rubber, leather, balsamic vinegar, raisins. With time, nutty & resinous. Caramel, hints of red fruits and bonfire smoke. Aromatic herbs.
    • Taste
Rubbery, leathery, ashy and peppery. Red berries, aromatic herbs, meaty notes, a touch of burnt wood.
With water, more aromatic herbs, ashes on the nose. The palate is more juicy and fruity.
    • Finish
      Long, lingering meaty notes, pu-er.

Nose. Skin, dampness, varnish and paint. Smoked dried fruit in the sun. The taste is sweet, bright, a little smoked mackerel and the North sea. The aftertaste is sweet, long-lasting, smoked. Turns into salt.
