Not complex, but clean, classic bourbon, of a level significantly higher than the mass market.

This is another very divisive whiskey.

Coming from the scotch world, a finished whiskey isn't something particularly out of the ordinary, but in the land of bourbon, it seems to be much more contentious.

Sure, finishing can be used to try and mask an immature spirit, but when it's done right, it can add layers to an already competent whiskey, or just a different but complementary angle on something familiar.

My mother-in-law bought this for me at Costco in N. California not quite two years ago and since I'm now nearing the last 1/4 of the bottle, I'm quite comfortable with how I feel about it.

    I like it a lot.

It's an interesting diversion and it shows a glimpse of what else is possible.

I took it over to some whisk(e)y friends, along with a handful of other American bottles, and it was the stand out of the night.

    They loved it.

It resonated most with the heads who like sherried scotch and bourbon, which makes all kinds of sense, but in the company of blantons and Cask strength Makers, I can also see how some of the bitter oak notes and wine tannins could be off-putting to some.

    Not to me though.

It has complexity in the service of a purposeful profile and nice texture which has body and a balanced astringency.

If I have a complaint, it's that it is a little on the nose and unsubtle in the collision between the cask influence and the spirit, but unashamedly, it is what it is and I can respect that.

    Aroma
    Caramel, alcohol sharpness, rye, herbs

    the taste
Rye, grain, wood spice, alcohol sharpness

    finish
    Medium length, sweetish, grain

With something better, since the sharpness of the alcohol decreases significantly

Solid and very tasty, especially on the palate. 79 points.
    • Nose
Unmistakably a bourbon. But the typical vanilla is not so penetrative that you could mistake it for glue. Berry fruits are there, it doesn't take long for the wood to come. Untreated oak. Raw and direct.
    • Taste
Sweet and woody. There is an artificial sweetness that is reminiscent of gummy bears (more precisely: cola bottles). Amazingly soft.
    • Finish
Quite a long time. Sweet wood. The mouth and throat remain warm.

    I tasted this whiskey blindly.

The sherry influences can be clearly seen here.
Overall, the whiskey is very spicy.
Slightly peppery, strong, but overall very round.
The finish tends to be of medium length.

    Nose: 21

    Total package: 22

Conclusion: Bourbon with red wine influence. Can what, has what. Good value for money.

wow, I didn't expect that now; a very sweet-looking bourbon that also comes across as quite complex.
In the taste, practically all aromas from the nose are present again, even a little spicier.
    It turned out really well.
    [90 - 86 = extremely tasty -> get a second bottle, don't look at the prize]
    • Nose
      90 90
superficially, sherry notes shoot up my nose. Wonderful sweetness of raisins, dates, figs. With a little more air one finds red grapes or berries.
At the same time there is a vanilla, caramel and a little more honey aroma (flower meadow honey). The same applies here: everything looks pretty sweet.
Every now and then the sticky notes known from bourbon appear, but they are not as obtrusive as I was used to.
Rather, they emphasize the basic character of the malt: it is "sweet".
With a little time, a slightly floral and at the same time spicy note of cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon builds up, which gives the whole thing even more complexity.
A little later, a nut aroma (hazelnut and macadamia) is added, which also pulls the malt in the direction of nut chocolate.
    • Taste
      90 90
first gently onset, then a good portion of peppery spice is added. But all the aromas from the nose can be found here again...
it also appears viscous and creamy-oily in consistency. The spiciness is also a little stronger than in the nose.
on the second sip, the vanilla flavors appear more strongly.
With more air in the bottle, it seems even more vanilla-heavy.
    • Finish
      87 87
the spice with a certain oak load stays in the mouth for a long time. The fruits are still there, but then they fade a little more.
However, the creamy feeling persists and then slowly fades away. A little more vanilla comes out at the end.

  14. marmeladow scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Multi-layered, clearly above average and very interesting bourbon that is worth its price.
Takes a lot of time in the glass and can handle a little water
    • Nose
      90 90
Oak, spices: clove, ginger, then also sweetness with vanilla and caramel, with water berries + grapes open up, a hint of mint and citrus fruit, sherry (and red wine)
Complex nose, in the background there is also a hint of corn / glue - very pleasant as an enrichment here
    • Taste
      91 91
Oak, ripe fruits with grapes, distinct spice with pepper, ginger, clove, a hint of sherry and red wine, raisins, dried fruits, sweetness, vanilla, caramel, some citrus, dark chocolate and tobacco (flavored pipe tobacco)
very tasty, becomes creamier with water, without losing its edges or just being mild and mellow. Extremely tasty
    • Finish
      90 90
long, with creamy flavor and everything that nose and taste promised

    • Nose

Sweetness, vanilla, caramel, a bit of alcoholic heat, a little glue, later red fruits and honey
    • Taste
      86 86
Sweet, fruity, red fruits, oak, spice
    • Finish
      86 86
      Sweetness, oak, spice, medium length

  16. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A good bourbon with a minimal twist. If you didn't know, you wouldn't notice the peculiarity either. It remains a good bourbon.
    • Nose
sweet and spicy, classic bourbon, but a slightly sticky, spicy, sweet liquorice note, which I like to have in some Japanese blends. The nose smells a few nuances different from a "normal" Bourbon, but the Bourbon side predominates. Over time, the nose becomes a little light and fruity.
    • Taste
the 47% pushes properly, in addition to the typical sweet and spicy bourbon notes, a slightly sour note creeps around, which can come from the wine or simply from the new oak.
    • Finish
quite tart, almost a little bitter, a lot of wood, more than expected, mint, spices and the bitterness could actually be due to refill sherry or wine barrels.

  17. Malthead19 scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

    - a very successful combination of bourbon wine and sherry
    - something different but really interesting from
    Taste profile
    - intense and versatile, very cool nose in the glass, great
complex and makes you want more
    • Nose
mild bourbon aromas combined with fruity sherry notes, well done, fresh, somewhat flowery
    • Taste
strong, intense approach, malty, distinct oak, vanilla, toffee, tobacco, dark berries, cherry
    • Finish
strong strong finish; long spicy aftertaste, becoming dry

  19. craide scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Quite tasty and varied bourbon. Unfortunately, the wine barrels come through only hesitantly, but still have a certain note. But that could have been a bit more intense for me.
    • Nose
      84 84
A little more restrained beginning, opens a little faster with water, or wait.
Then comes caramel, vanilla, some roasted almonds, a slight note of glue, fresh coffee beans, a little fruity like cherries, orange juice, plums. everything rather creamy, soft and quite harmonious. Indeed, a bit "winey" on the nose. Alcohol is well integrated.
    • Taste
      83 83
Spicy, oak, slightly tingling. Short peppery heat then rather mild.
fruity of cherries, raspberries, change to slightly tart currants, red grapes. on the palate it appears a little more alcoholic than on the nose.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium-long finish, slightly dry, vanilla sweetness, bitterness of coffee,

Eyes: Orange Gold Scent Nose: A soft, coordinated and fragrant smell, orange peel, spices (cinnamon, cloves, white cocos and amomum), some gingerbread men, cream red bean buns, custard pudding, dried petals, maple syrup , American muffin taste Palate: medium-high sweetness, a little salty, a little sour prunes. Turmeric powder, pepper, cinnamon powder; souffle, soufflé, candied orange zest, some candies, cheese bread, red dates crisp, walnuts, some fruit at the end, lemon tart, cocoa powder, deep Roasted coffee beans with woody aroma.
Final rhyme Finish: long, fresh milk toast, brown sugar ginger tea, dried flowers, a little herb, buckwheat wine Body: medium light, extremely soft

    Nose: 86/100
    Palate: 87/100
    Finish: 87/100
    Body: 86/100
    Overall: 86.5/100
The taste is extremely soft, smooth and coordinated, and everything is subtle and not losing weight. You can get a glimpse of the beauty of bourbon from the legislature. I've always been uncomfortable with the name "suitable for Asians". This time, Fuku and Shinji taught me how to be a person.

  21. FritzeKrautman scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

It's a typical bourbon. The marketing bohei around the two famous blenders (including the Japanese) cannot reflect the whiskey. It is not bad for a bourbon - but there is nothing more then.
    • Nose
      85 85
Solvents, corn, burnt wood, vanilla, the alcohol stings slightly, becoming more acidic, peanut
    • Taste
      84 84
Sweet, mouthwash solution, a little tingling on the tip of the tongue, alcohol well integrated and strong enough overall, light peanut again
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium-length finish, some bitterness, mouthwash, otherwise rather unspectacular

  22. Bam scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Quite coherent and round, but also not very spectacular. For me no typical wine or sherry flavors like those found in Scotch, rather an intensification of the fruity bourbon flavors.
    • Nose
Corn sweetness and a strong cherry note. Green apple. Vanilla and caramel. Some solvent. Some oak flavor. Very round and soft nose, no trace of alcohol
    • Taste
strong start, oily mouthfeel. The nose repeats itself, cherries, green apple, vanilla, light oak flavor.
    • Finish
short. Still the cherries and apples, vanilla. Some milk chocolate.

  24. g00se scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Idiosyncratic combination where I liked the smell the best. One sample is definitely enough, so I prefer clean bourbon.
    • Nose
      85 85
Fruity and sweet, with cherries and red berries. The initial adhesive note is only very subtle.
    • Taste
      83 83
Bourbon and barrel can be tasted clearly from each other, with the red wine barrel dominating here. Reminds me of rosé wine.
    • Finish
      84 84
The adhesive note is hidden here. The whiskey remains present for a long time with a dry mouthfeel and a taste of cherries.

  25. katarn_rb scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Aroma: Full and intense with oak, caramel and vanilla. Fruity Sherryoten follow.

Taste: Warming with raisins and dried dates. Sweet and fruity with hints of dark chocolate and spices.

Finish: Long and warm with soft oak notes.
