This whisky is actually at least 9 years old and is a 50/50 vatting of first-fill bourbon barrels and first-fill Oloroso Sherry butts (Made of 50% American oak and 50% European oak staves). Overall This is a lovely well balanced malt. The dominant flavours seem to be ex-bourbon and the sherry casks leave a delightful highlight on top of that.
    • Nose
Very malty up front with cereal and barley water. Honeyed sweetness, vanilla and a touch of caramel. Distillery character with some citrus peel, crisp green apples and pears. Buttered rye bread. Then the darker sherry notes show themselves. Oloroso casks provide hazelnuts with some dried figs and plums but these do not overpower the character of the malt. A touch of ginger warmth with some cinnamon and cardamom. Then some golden syrup and a cooling mint. Given the ABV, there is a touch of solvent astringency but time in the glass helps calm things and allows more flavour to come through.
    • Taste
Big and bold flavours up front, very much showing both the bourbon and sherry notes very well. The delicate honey and cereal malt notes are present throughout. Orange peels, nectarines, red cherries and plums. Some bananas fosters. More marzipan and ginger biscuits. The ginger heat is turned up with some cracked black pepper as well. An almost salt-like note that helps bring the flavours together. The 57.5% ABV is so well integrated on the palate as well.
    • Finish
Medium in length and drying. More of the fruits from the palate continue here and fade into more warmth.

Was the best for me in the Coronalympics CL1, blind tasting. Surprisingly.
