Very a-typical Macduff, never had one before with such a peaty influence. Very interesting for sure, and besides that, it's just a very nice whisky as well. Strong and intense.

Full scent, a lot of fruit, prunes, also a clear hint of peat, 'Scapino effect' as I get with many peated whiskies (but actually never with a MacDuff...). Fake leather, rubber, some tobacco and roasted meat.
    • Taste
      87 87
Strong, red fruits, berries, a lot of pepper, still a hint of smoke, pure chocolate. Very intense.
    • Finish
      88 88
Still powerful, smoke and red fruits, a peaty edge, tobacco, long finish. Very intense.

The relatively strong and powerful sherry peat has the disadvantage of strong alcohol stimulation and slightly rough flavor.
    • Nose
      87 87
Smells sweet, toffee, candied fruit, typical sherry barrel style. Along with some peat, iodine. The sherry barrel flavor is more prominent after the cup wakes up
    • Taste
      86 86
The alcohol in the mouth is slightly more irritating, and it is a little bit jarring. Peat flavors throughout, iodine, carbon ink, some leather goods. The front section is a comfortable sherry flavor, ripe red fruit, candied fruit, then some spice, star anise, cinnamon, a little salty in the middle, and some bitter bottom. After adding water, the irritation of alcohol is greatly reduced, the salty and bitter bottom are also more obvious, and the peat flavor runs through.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is spice, a little bitter, and then to sweet candied fruit, a touch of peat.

    Atypical

Judging by the color, this was a very active sherry cask. Ah, yes, first fill. This young Macduff was bottled by the Italian company Wilson & Morgan at 100 Proof, which translates into 57.1% ABV.

I re-check the label to make sure I have the correct sample, because this is quite atypical for Macduff! But yes, it’s the right one. Leather, Wellington boots, roast beef, the coat of a horse, rancio and a drop of Tabasco. I wonder how much of the distillery character remained intact.

On the palate I cannot recognize Macduff either. I do get a sturdy and spicy malt on dark fruit (plums, dates, figs and raisins) with lots of spices like cloves, chili pepper and lots of woodsmoke. Some origin chocolate, pinch of salt and two lost raspberries in the middle. Very intense, but very atypical at the same time. But it has to be said: awesome malt.

You’d be right to call this finish long on leather and tobacco leaves, a hint of red fruit and lots of spices.

This is Macduff? Nah, this is mostly a very active sherry cask that effortlessly overpowered the distillery’s DNA and still delivered a grand malt. Thanks, Manny!
