slurred nose, but very tasty - usually on the young Speysides the opposite is true

Interesting dram that needs some time. The sweet notes come more to the front in time. If you like Clynelish, Glenlossie and Linkwood, this might be a dram for you.

      86 86
Fresh, candy sweet, pineapple, green appels, candle wax, ripe banana, malty, honey and vanilla
    • Taste
      87 87
More of the sweet wax notes, ripe stone fruits like apples and pears, lemongrass, banana, pineapple, vanilla, honey, some spice notes like cardamom, menthol and a leather note.

mid finish, with waxy notes, vanilla toffee, honey, malty and spices. Again that cardamom, but also some white pepper.

This is how you get to know a distillery. A very naked Glen Elgin and thus a simple (but good) whisky. But that right here, is the art as keeping things simple is often the hardest part in any process. The cask it matured in is a large contributor to the final taste of a whisky, but I feel it was just a vessel (vessels) to tame down the alcoholic sharpness in this case. A light but fruity whisky is what's left. Good summer dram, something for a tumbler glass as well.
    • Nose
Spirit driven and 'green', as in grassy and fruity. We've got pear juice, apple cider, blood orange, white grape, cranberry and coconut. Then toffee, cookie dough, Greek yoghurt and apple pie. Further on fresh cut grass, lavender, ozone and almond paste. So fruits, sweets and not much else. I feel these casks were not that active. A good way to get 'to the core' though.
    • Taste
Juicy, mouth coating and a little fiery. That is the 48% of course. Focus is on the fruit again: Pear juice, apple, coconut, fig and blueberry. Then some fond sweetness with lemon cheesecake, caramel, sultana, rice pudding, icing sugar, grain cereal, tobacco, ginger, bison grass and a little pepper. A good balanced act with minor cask influence. Complex? Not at all and that's not a necessity here. This is a dram I would categorize as 'drink and say no more'. Some malts don't need overthinking.
    • Finish
Medium in length. Very focused on the malt with some fresh apple, chocolate and icing sugar too.

A typical Glen Elgin, with its sweet, slightly fruity and mineral/chalky nose. The taste is not as overtly sweet as the nose suggests but has a nice bitter edge as well as the chalky and barley notes. It's fairly watery for 48% to be honest, especially when compared to the 12 year old that was bottled for The Daily Dram at 46%. Aftertaste has some white pepper, some grapefruit and wood. All in all a nice dram, just don't expect something extraordinary.

Whisky that's worth trying, but I wouldn't go back to it. Nose. Bright, fresh, floral, Apple flavor. The aroma of freshly cooked jam. The taste is sweet, bright, slightly scalding, fruity. Aftertaste. Bright, sweet, long-lasting.
