It's always a holiday when I have such a sample in my glass. Absolutely wonderful dram.
    • Nose
      93 93
First, a lot of dark honey, a shelf with leather-bound books, chocolate and thick jam. Further, propolis appears in the aroma, the chill of which I really like, and hazelnuts.
    • Taste
      92 92
The body is thick and this drum wants to be chewed. Chocolate, tobacco, the same dark honey, plum marmalade and a refreshing cold in the entire mouth from propolis.
    • Finish
      91 91
      Average on peppery chocolate.

    Colour:
    Old gold
    Nose:
Leather, dry cardboard, nuts, chestnuts, chestnuts, liqueur and plum jam. Here, the dull spiciness stands out more and is complemented with brown sugar, honey and furniture polish. Slightly fresh, the spice sets the tone here.
    Taste:
Soft, spicy, fresh and invigorating. Perfect wood with nuts, leather, a now powerful spice with smoke, peppermint, coffee and liquorice - dark-dull and fresh at the same time. Although the fruit notes are more or less completely missing the taste is great!
    Finish:
Long - dry-dry and smoky-fresh! The wood also fits here. In addition, liquorice, coffee, dry smoke and when fading some chocolate.

Old school sherried Springbank!! Stonkingly delicious!
    • Nose
      94 94
Thick, sticky, honeyed. Yup, three words that I love in my whisky. They usually mean very old sherry casks! Lots of honeydew. Dates, golden raisins, dried apricots. A hint of walnut.
    • Taste
      93 93
Bright. Mouth-coating. The flavors do a little dance on the tongue. There is a tiny hint of dryness, but boy, this is pretty much faultless. The honeycombed fruitiness continues with sticky dried fruits. A bit metallic but this is from a mini.
    • Finish
      91 91
Slight bitterness at the end. Short to moderate length.

A very good expression of this 21-year-old bottlings with the parchment label - I will need to compare it later next to the others Archibald J. Mitchell and Hedley G. Wright
    • Nose
Fruity, citrusy, cooked oranges, beeswax, hints of old books, motor oil, old wood, a bit toffee, whiffs of smoke - very good old Springbank profile
    • Taste
Very much creamy and waxy, just little punch, fruity, apples, oranges, apricots, subtle sweetness, candied sugar, little smoke, minerals, little toffe and espresso, spices, hints of nutmeg, a bit nutty too - great
    • Finish
      Medium long, warm, grapefruits

[December, 2012]  I found this dram in an advents calendar sampled by MaRa.

    In
my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5.  I took no detailed notes.

I spilled half the 50ml sample bottle like an idiot and have to rate from the remaining portion. Pours an amber/copper. Nose is rich salted caramel, crystalized fruit jellies (pear, apple, guava). Some butter too, but not in the pie crust Highland Park style. This is magnificently tight and refined. Mouth is about brown sugars, lots of bright green apple jelly, old cognac perhaps. Old, honeyed, and slightly bitter notes which I've found in most any old Springbank. This destroys the parchment label Hadley Wright 21 year.

    A great Dram !!

The development of the taste stops after a minute (or a half …) - that doesn't matter a lot because the pleasure of the taste is that intense;  but it costs a higher rating …

The finish leaves you with a wonderful caramel-leather …

Tasting with FineSpirits_butler1 in April 2016.
    • Nose
Lighthouse, enormously depth, thickened cherry- and plum-jams, motors and garage, spicy melted butter, peat smoke, lively spiciness, boardwalk at the seaside, tobacco leaves, Humidor; forest flavors, needle wood, forest honey, many fruits, behind that: roast marinade, Minestrone, caramelized fruit sugar, leather, old furnitures, old barrel, scouring powder, great fruit sweetness, old upholstery with fruit mass, apple sauce, some Demerara, choco caramel, a 'vibrant spiciness' lying under all, tangerines, motor oily lighthousy peatiness, burnt wood, superior Vinaigrette - underlied with coffee ground, salt water, Brandy beans, becomes very 'round' after a while, cake like biscuits, shortbread cookies ...
