For such a young whisky, this is showing very good character and flavour. The age is apparent due to the heat on the nose and palate but overall very impressive.
    • Nose
Sherry and wine forward on the nose. Dried red fruits and apricots. A touch of marzipan. Red wine mustiness with sour cherries and grapes. Ginger, clove and cinnamon. Some vanilla and caramel giving it sweetness. Hot on the nose though, showing the high ABV.
    • Taste
Sweet and mouthwatering, quite oily and hot on the palate. Some oranges and nectarines. Berries, plums and milk chocolate. Treacle and vanilla pudding. Some baked apples. Cracked black pepper warmth with more cinnamon and cloves. Some drying oak tannins then take over.
    • Finish
Warming and spicy. Very heavy on the oak influence here with some bitter tannins giving this a roasted coffee note.

Fruit bomb, but not overly sweet. Worth trying.

A pleasant nose but one that's difficult to describe as no single note comes through.
    • Taste
      85 85
A nice hit of fruit and figgy pudding. Not overly sweet.
    • Finish
      84 84
Long - the initial punch gently subsides.

N: With a unique/complex sweet cask-driven pong, we’ve gone to STR and beyond, the well-considered sherry & wine-forward influence informing the whisky’s character and providing plenty of nasal variety. I preferred to add just a little water for the palate but given the high strength, the nose doesn’t need it at all. In part, that’s helped by the [pre-maturation] layered blending and the slow water reduction method, says Dhavall.

T: Again, this expression is cask-driven but with the same consideration as on the nose. This offers up such a varied aromatic cask-character though with a reoccurring note of sherried toffee, so much toffee. Dhavall reminds us of his blending background. He is a blender-come-distiller, even blending the new make before the spirit enters the casks for maturation.

F: Shorter than the J.J..but the toffee runs on.

C: You can’t make this style of whisky accidentally. Clever stuff.

I’m thinking this whisky could really shine with more 2nd refill maturation and ageing. I ask if there are longer-term plans to steer the character profile for The Lakes whisky towards ages, say at 10, 15, 18 years? [Grammatically clumsily I know] ‘Yes’ is the answer. That’s the plan.

    official information:

The Lakes Single Malt Whisky Whiskymaker’s Reserve No.2 is an intense and robust expression, bottled at cask strength (60.9% ABV) and matured in the finest, meticulously sourced PX, red wine and bourbon casks. Non-chill filtered and bottled at natural colour.

The nose is rich and complex with dry fruits and treacle, creamy layers of wood spice and comforting vanilla on the palate and a long, luxurious finish.

The Whiskymaker’s Reserve is an artistic exploration of oak and blending; of flavour evolution and defining a house style. Creating a new whisky requires a framework of sorts, but there has to be room within it to play, to follow gut feeling and instinct. The architecture of each release of Whiskymaker’s Reserve will evolve in keeping with both our increasing sherry cask influence and our sense of adventure.

Enjoy as you please. As this release is bottled at cask strength, we recommend adding a few drops of water to open up the flavours.
