The extremely good rating here in the whisky base and from Jim Murray make me very curious, especially since it is my favorite distillery. I am happy to see the whisky in the glass with its reddish-brown color.
In the nose I immediately have an incredibly pleasant fruitiness with boiled cherries, plum jam, raisins, dates and a pleasant acidity of currants and sour cherries. If you warm the glass with your hands, the acidic note becomes stronger, but is never annoying. The fruitiness is accompanied by some pepper, cinnamon, a lot of dark chocolate with pieces of caramel. There is a heavy honey sweetness above everything and in the background you can see leather, old furniture wood and a light menthol note. A wonderful nose: strong and soft at the same time, because everything harmonizes wonderfully, fruity, sweet, pleasant tannins and spiciness ... excellent! I also hoped for the variety of flavors.
In the mouth incredibly strong, intense, oily and sweet. The mouth is literally flooded! Wow! It really tingles and sizzles on the tongue and yet the pure whisky can be enjoyed very well and I don't even want to add water to this fantastic drop. The heavy sweetness is accompanied by dates, raisins, boiled red fruits, plum jam and strong pepper. The tannins become stronger with coffee beans covered with chocolate, some tobacco and leather. The tannins do not outweigh the taste experience, but form the perfect partner for this fruity, heavy sweetness. I'm excited!
In the finish, the sweetness sticks in the mouth, the raisins and dates are still clearly noticeable. In addition to the caramel, the chocolate is now mixed with a few nuts, in the background you can feel a very light salt note. But not maritime, but rather like salty caramel. From the second sip you can still feel some liquorice. The finish is long and simply wonderful. A creamy and slightly dry mouthfeel suggests to me: Have another sip! Treat yourself! And I cannot resist this request ...
Overall a top whisky! Just like the 1990er 28y PX puncheon from Glendronach, we're playing in the Champions League again. This is a whisky that hits my taste buds. Whether I find him better than my current favorites (1990s 28y PX puncheon from batch 17) is difficult to say without a direct comparison.
I get good 93/100 points, as was the case with the 1990s. An excellent whisky!
