speaking for malt, he does not drown in sherry - but since 14yo and later 16yo Secret Speysiders were just hyped up for doing so in conjunction with near-perfect Casks, he certainly is not what most assuredly blind buyers expect to have.

Is a nice sherry whisky - a bit musty and dirty - for 12yo really well matured and full-bodied. I think the price tag was around 80 € - I am not sure - did not interest me, I was invited to the whisky. I would not buy it, even if it were now available for 70-80 € - rather an Allardice or Billy Walker Revival - everything this can do - only much better.

This has nothing close to the 14 or 16. Its a more refined Version of 10 and 11... But it's not hype worthy.

Barely worth the buck spent for it (115€). Got it for a bottle split and I am not overwhelmed.
Its okay to try this, but nothing more

    Van Zuylen shop:

"We can't officially say it, but it looks like this secret Speysider was distilled again at Macallan. This time it happened in November 2006. Then he matured for 12 years on Pedro Ximénez sherry butt # 107. Bottling followed in August 2019 , 612 bottles with a solidity of 51.8% The whisky has its natural color and is not cold filtered.

    Color: amber.

Nose: aromas of mentol, coffee, ozone and pine.

Taste: notes of chocolate, sherry, crème brûlée, toffee apple toasted oak. The aftertaste is silky with notes of buttered brioche, salted caramel and sherry. "

Very successful PX sherry barrel maturation. The malt does what the color promises without being too sweet. Water addition is not necessary.

Dark chocolate, plums, dried dates and figs, a hint of mint. So everything that color and PX barrel maturation can be expected.
    • Taste
      91 91
Creamy, dark chocolate. A little sweet, but much less than to be expected with a PX sherry ripening. The sherry fruit (plums, dates, figs) somewhat reserved and more in the background, this malt is more on the (positive) "woody" side with espresso roasted aromas.
    • Finish
      91 91
Finally, there are espresso, residual sweetness and dark chocolate. Medium to long finish.

Nose: Creme Brulee, caramel, coffee, nuts & raisins, slighty meaty and mentholated.

Taste: Sweet, sour and oaky, a little tannic, meaty and herbal. Tiramisu, maple syrup and espresso.

Comments: 100% Macallan for my taste buds. If you liked their Ruby you should enjoy this one. Its like a Mac Ruby with a higher ABV, therefore less rounded and more punchy. /87

Soft, sweet PX Malt. If you are on something like that will be very happy here. This is a bit too one-dimensional for me.

cooked figs (jam), dried dates, raisins. Minimal oak note. In addition herbal notes, typically PX. Could be nen aufotzotzter PX-Sherry. Pimped in terms of the alcohol is more noticeable than a "real" PX, but also not so intense.
    • Taste
      88 88
First, full broadside PX sherry - sweet, date + raisin, minimal herbal note -, then he bit something on the tongue. But then it is creamy and has ne clearly sweet expression. Alcohol is well integrated. Has something of vanilla pudding with a shot around.

      88 88
again very creamy and soft. Fairly tart / bitter notes. Cappuccino.

Sherrycask influence all over, red fruits raisins, some chocolate. In the body the alcohol intensity is a bit too much actually, leading to some bitterness in the finish. A few drops of water brings that down for sure, but immediately has a flattening influence in the nose.
Thus balance is not the keyword here, nevertheless it's a pleasant experience.

Pretty powerful, some alcohol punching, raisins, berries, chocolate, ripe apples, prunes. Some autumn forest. Rich nose.
With some water the nose gets a bit weaker.
    • Taste
      87 87
Pretty some power, pepper, pretty intense. Red fruits, berries, raisins, chocolate.
With some water, it calms down in very positive way.
    • Finish
      86 86
Still pretty intense, red fruits, raisins, some bitterness enters now. Middle long.

Phew, totally sherry overloaded, with a lot of smell you could see a Macallan, compared to the 14 and 16 Maltman Macallan I have to say that it just looks overloaded. Still drinkable
