5th Kilkerran 15 years tasted, and 1st in fino.
Not a great success, the sulfur is really too present, and if it is saved by a slight complexity on the nose, the dram collapses in the mouth.

For the moment the least good of those tasted.
    • Nose
      86 86
Sulfur nose, it's really not my cup of tea.
      Prunes, dates, oily leather, cream.
Pepper, liquorice, resin. Wood, nuts, bitter cocoa.
      A little barbecue.
Fortunately the aromas of the fino slightly catch up with the sulfur.
    • Taste
      80 80
In the mouth we take again a huge dose of sulfur.
It is at the limit of the melted glue. It's almost "bland", you only feel that.
Barbecue, salt, spray, leather, pepper ... while looking carefully.
    • Finish
      81 81
Final on glue, rubber, pepper and a little camphor. Light peat and cold ash.

The sulphur is just a little too present for me, while the nose has an intensity and somewhat old-school quality to it that I really enjoy.
    • Nose
Interestingly savoury, with notes of cured meat, soy and brine, but also a whiff of resin and pine needles. There's a touch of triple sec and smoked paprika powder too. The whisky has a light ashiness to it, but also a fruitier side with brambles and strawberries, as well as a subtle note of Maraschino cherries. Decent complexity.
    • Taste
So there's a whiff of struck matches to start, but it doesn't derail the whisky — not entirely at least. Charred meat, peanut skins and strawberry compote. However, the sulphur does outshine... No wait, that's the wrong term: The sulphur does suppress most other flavours for me though.
    • Finish
More of the above with a touch of chocolate. Long.

I can imagine why they interrupted the maturation on the fino cask, it's too sulphury for my taste. The mellowing influence of the bourbon cask is hard to notice though.
    • Nose
      88 88
Immediately reminds me of well aged Madeira, that's unexpected! It's an intense and broad nose: chocolate, citrus fruits, green apples, metworst (dutch/german dried sausage) and a dose of Campbeltown: leather, light peat, mineral/briny.
    • Taste
      86 86
Fresh and sour notes (citrus fruits) become more bitter (dark chocolate) and ultimately earthy and dirty: mushrooms, vinegar and quite some sulphur. Difficult but entertaining.
    • Finish
      83 83
Mild peat, chocolate, coffee and citrus fruits unfortunately make way for rubber and sulphur.

As a huge Kilkerran fan I'm disappointed by the sulphur from the fino cask. The nose is nice, but alas the complexity of the distillate is killed by the sulphur. I hope the new core range 16yo is going to be better.

    • Nose
      87 87
Blueberry, fudge, salami, peat, sulphur and pineapple.
    • Taste
      88 88
Peat, blueberry, caramel, mocha and salami.
    • Finish
      88 88
Salted caramel, peat, mocha and blueberry.

This was a single cask split for the Netherlands, Poland and Switzerland

Nose: candied walnuts, halawi dates, baklava, candied citron and sfinj, fruit rollups
Palate: blood orange juice and angelica
    Finish: kumquat marmalade, apricot kernels

Tasted as part of Kilkerran 15yo Single Cask Tasting with David Allen, Grant Macpherson and Nicole Lindsay, Campbeltown Malts Festival online tasting week.
