A 12-year-old Glendronach as a single cask, matured in PX barrel and bottled in cask strength? Sounds very promising! Safran colors, with a strong 60.2% Vol., The Dram shows after a short moment quite wide windows. The anticipation is rising.

Undiluted is first a soft marzipan aroma wide, cedar and milk chocolate. Gingerbread and dried apricots are to smell. Currants and green bananas display a beautiful fruit character, which is supported by a honey note. The alcohol is beautifully integrated.
Diluted to 48% Vol., The perception changes. On the nose now yellow banana, vanilla, cotton candy, cedar, moist tobacco, apricot, pear. The smell is pleasant and noble.
    • Taste

Enjoyed undiluted shows the Dram all his strength. He has a sharp tongue and his lips are burning. The palate is oily. Herbal notes and mocha first determine the taste pattern before the salivation begins and a honey sweetness follows.
After dilution, the whisky is oily and sweet on the palate. The fruits are ripe and balanced and in addition to pronounced banana and apricot almonds, mocha and nougat are in the taste. A light floral note gives the whisky a freshness and some peppermint tingles on the palate.
    • Finish
      88 88
In the undiluted state, the whisky leaves first sharpness and then a bitter note, followed by the herbs and a subtle sweetness. The finish can be regarded as medium to long.
Reduced in alcohol, the finish is characterized by sweetness, fruit and new wood. Very round and soft, the whisky leaves a pleasant aroma that lasts medium long.

Glendronach 2007 a successful cask bottling, water does this malt very well!
    • Nose
Intense aromas, lots of sherry with raisins, plums and light oak. Some toffee and chocolate. Beautiful triad of dried fruit, nuts and dark fruits.
    • Taste
Sherry, sweet and creamy, dark honey, berries and toffee, dried fruit and leather.
    • Finish
Very long, sweet sherry, fruit, dark chocolate, orange peel, cinnamon plums, sweet finish.

A very average Glendronach can hardly convince me. It lacks the intensity of the "old 12y" bottlings. He comes very cautious and opens only with the addition of plenty of water, but then loses strength significantly and is then most likely to compare with a standard 12y. Bottom line 84 points.

It's hard to believe that this "only" was allowed to mature for 12 years. In comparison with the 12yo Standard and 15yo (new with PX), this is clearly the winner of the day for me and justifies the additional price. Especially for inexperienced tongues, but also otherwise, the addition of water is recommended, which increases the complexity significantly. A very typical Glendronach, very similar in profile to the standard range with Oloroso and PX, but with more spices and a finish that doesn't have to hide from the 18 & 21 yo. The very fruity-sweet profile of the 12yo Standard is perfectly complemented by the intense flavor. Even rinsing down to ~ 46% in no way takes away the intense aftertaste. Great drop and absolutely worth the 90 € especially because of its compatibility with water. One of the best young GD single casks I've had.

Well, young Glendronachs with over 60%.
For me, these are modern whiskys that never have the chance to ripen so that they become a malt that has something to tell.
It is difficult to taste something undiluted.
Some aromas such as orange peel, tobacco and espresso dissolve with water. But everything is still rough and rough.
Some like that, unfortunately it's nothing to me.

Taste blind in a competition. Good balanced sherried dram. Expected it to be a bit older and a bit lower on the abv.
