    First impression:

Round and mild. After a moment's release, pleasant toffee and caramel notes unfold in the nose. The 55% Vol. Are not noticeable. The palate is also very mild and balanced. Short again the caramel and toffee notes, some milk chocolate, crème brûlée followed by warming oak with a very light but pleasant bitterness. The 55% Vol. Are virtually palpable on the palate. The finish is short to medium in length, slightly spicy bitter, accompanied by a roasted note of coffee and brown sugar and some oak, but is (unfortunately) not dominated by this.

All in all, after the first 2cl a very pleasant and pleasing Malt, over the price can be argued as always. For a 14yo Cardhu in CS wonderfully balanced and easy, but already with enough reserves to enjoy on a winter evening.

Tried at a Diageo tasting in Toronto. This is an interesting Cardhu as its extremely rare to taste at cask strength, heck there hasn't been a cask strength Cardhu on the market, even from indie bottlers, since at least 2012. Retailed at the LCBO for $200 CAD.

    Colour: Gold

Nose: Wow this is different, big ripe juicy pears and pie crust dough along with soft but not sugary sweet apple jelly, lemon curd, orange marmalade, milk powder, marzipan, ginger cream, cocoa powder and soft buttery cashews

Palate: Much spicier and hot then the nose, big ripe oranges and lemons along with spiced pears, spiced pie crust, apple jelly, vanilla powder

Finish: Short to Medium with apple jelly, pie crust, raisins and orange marmalade

The nose on this whisky is soft while still very complex and really well put together. But sadly the palate and the finish just take what should be a fantastic dram and bring my enjoyment down and down. From start to finish it was like seeing an Aretha Franklin quality of vocal performance devolve into karaoke night at the local pub. Water helps the heat a bit but the complexity past the fruit and citrus just isn't there for me. For the cost of entry I don't think this one is worth a buy but if you really like pear-dominated whiskies this would be a fun dram to get at a pub that has it open.

    Nose:
At the beginning I notice sweet and sour flavors. Oak and vanilla follow. For a short time I feel an alcoholic note that quickly fades away. There is a light fruit, which I associate with pear. There is nougat and some leather at the end.

    Taste:
Sweet again with grapes and pear. I can taste some soap, freshly cut grass and spices, especially cardamom.

    Outlet:
short to medium, sweet and spicy and somewhat bitter.

  5. Calmar scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

Young and unformed on one side of whisky, the same cardboard, bitterness, but on the other hand, surprisingly mature and juicy creamy and floral-tropical notes.
    • Nose
Open, dry, grain, lemon peel, nuts, mineral notes - chalk, stone dust; vanilla, light floral and tropical shades, creamy sweet tones.
    • Taste
Powerful, astringent, oak, cardboard, sweet creamy notes, vanilla, astringency of the bark, uncoated tablets, a little plastic, the bitterness of the bark, everything is somehow messy.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, lemon peel, custard, vanilla, cardboard, grain, oak, light floral notes.

I hoped for a little bit more when a cardhu came out in cask strength.
It is very malty and herbaceous, fine to drink, but not particularly complex.

Bright, berry, very original whisky for sweet tooth.
    • Nose
Very fruity and berry (red apple and blackberry), with a high content of spices, figs and caramel.
    • Taste
Sweet, with hints of blackberry, wild strawberry, apple of paradise, pepper and peppermint candy in the distance.
    • Finish
Long enough, with a menthol chill, with tones of cream, blackberry and red apple. At the end, tannins, spices and a note resembling strawberry candy gently come out.

    • Nose
Sweet, with honey, tropical notes, spice, and citrus.
    • Taste
Dry and sweet. Honey, peach, spice, lemon, and ripe pear.
    • Finish
Very long and dry with citrus, spice, and honey.
