4th of tasted in this series.
Here the nose is a little scary as it lacks depth.
Fortunately in the mouth it takes on a whole new dimension.
    • Nose
      86 86
      Typical bourbon nose.
White fruits, citrus: lemon. Light fishing.
Green wood, vanilla. Light crème brûlée.
      Slight nettle.
    • Taste
      88 88
In the mouth it is much more salty and marine.
      Oyster, semi-salted butter, lemon.
Pepper, always this light crème brûlée.
      Candied lemon confit.
    • Finish
      88 88
Slightly peaty finish, on lemon candy, salted butter caramel, spray.

Not that complex for 15 years old, the nose without water was outstanding tough.
    • Nose
      91 91
Cinnamon, yes clearly bourbon wood, vanilla, mineral, earth, peat but the peat is almost gone. The nose reminds me off the latest wip bourbon edition. With water more like the 12, camomille, bakery sweetness, custard.
    • Taste
      89 89
Spice, pepper, bitter, the taste is hard to pin down. With water more off that sweet bakery and custard.
    • Finish
      87 87
Bitter, going dry, inner tubes, earth, more mineral, with water the sweetness overtakes more.

  3. juju cassoulet scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
      86 86
      Lemon, citrus zest, fresh almond
    • Taste
      87 87
      Quince, hot
    • Finish
      84 84
Unpleasant bitterness like the peel of a bad candied lemon

Pretty sure I have had this before. Sure enough, I have [WLP87].

N: This represents whisky making before the full robot take-over. Glengyle’s beautiful smoky peanut-y pong offers loads & loads,….
T: ,…. and loads. So refreshing to go back to a J. & A. Mitchell malt after a long spell with whiskies from such different designations.
    F: Dry smoky cocoa.

C: A great whisky that offers a different perspective of Glengyle compared to the classic 12yo [WLP190 WLP289 WLP389].

  6. aphex scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Simple clean, mineral and quaffable whisky.
    • Nose
Polish, pencil shavings, chalk, wet pebbles, a veil of smoke, lemons, light earthy peat.
    • Taste
Oilky, salty, lemony, juicy and peppery. Chalky notes arrive later.
With water ? Forget water for this one.
    • Finish
      Long, drying, mineral and lemony.

  7. Jnpons scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

    Comments: nose slightly closed ....

fine peat, mineral well present, chalk / clay.

    A touch of chocolate, almond?

    Lively, invigorating, robust.

A light smoke, a little pepper.
    A touch of lemon pie.
    Alcohol present.

Has the Glengyle distillery been around for 15+ years already?! This single cask offering was released yesterday [at time of writing].

N: Non-salted lemon seasoned oysters, soft smoky earthy toasted barley and bicarbonate of soda is all I noted, but there was plenty more going on.
T: Very tasty salted shortbread, and sour raisins? There’s a lovely fruitiness that suggested sherry at times and an equally likeable healthy citrus freshness.
F: With a candidness shared by Glengyle’s recent 8yo [WB], this is genuinely sweet barley juice by the end, followed by toasty phenols.
C: Not all of Kilkerran’s 2004 vintage cask were as lovely as this. At around £85, now five times that on the secondary, this was sold out before you could sing: LINK
