Has gotten nice wood, but rocks above all with great fruit and honey aromas. Typically grassy (better than grisly) and the best Deanston I've had in the glass so far.
    • Nose

Seductive notes of honey, pineapple chewy.
Spicy mud flats with blooming sea lavender.
    • Taste
      90 90
Honey notes are complemented by pleasant grassy notes, which then move towards IPA hops. Tasty and balanced, the alcohol is hardly noticeable.
    • Finish
      88 88
Doesn't become bitter in the aftertaste, but remains sweet and tart for a long time with gentle notes of grapefruit.

    Kingston

A few years ago House of Macduff, Scottish indie, bottled this 22 years old Deanston in their well-known series The Gold Cask, which is reserved for single cask releases at cask strength.

Well, that nose is something else. Not very fruity – and the fruit that I do get has started to rot, which is not an off-note – but mostly notes of pastry and sweet malt. Reminds me a bit of the mash of a blond beer. Soft peppers. Garden herbs. Quite intense. After a few minutes some more fruit does start to emerge in the guise of brown banana and overripe peach.

While quite intense on the palate as well, the alcohol is well integrated. I do not feel the urge to add water. It’s a lot more fruity on the palate than the nose announced. A truckload of pineapple and peach, followed by mango and dragon’s fruit. Yes, this is quickly turning tropical. I feel like I’m on Jamaica. Deanston? You mean Kingston, right? Feisty as well.

On the finish, the tropical fruit lingers, while the spices keep your mouth warm.

Not an easy whisky, to be honest. It was work. But rewarding indeed. Thanks, Gunther!

Definitely not a simple or easy whisky for beginners, but quite the opposite for advanced whisky.
It is not fruity and soft, but individually strong, full-bodied and intense.
Lots of ale, brewery flavors, pale ale, malt, grains, grasses, spices and herbs,
slight peppery notes, oak wood spice influence is present, but not unpleasantly pungent.
Alcohol may be strong, but very nicely balanced and complexly balanced.
Definitely something different and outside of the normal Bourbon Cask profile.

The spirit character shines through in this one.

So if you are a fan of Deanston bottlings, where the cask doesn't dominate but only compliments the spirit, you should check this one out.
