N: Sublime and distinctive madeira & iced lemon cake and a series of other confectionary delights.
T: This one leads to a super-sherried sticky-sweet mouthfeel as if I’d just filled my mouth with toffees and a spoonful of creme brulee with all the topping.
F: Corn syrup-sweet, turning slightly less sweet towards a long slightly waxy, barley faithful conclusion.
C: A violet-less Bowmore, this is liquid-cake in a glass from a unique sherry refill.

People with low sulfur tolerance will certainly not be able to lure this whisky from behind the oven, maybe even repel it. My tolerance threshold is higher, sometimes sulfur is also a welcome additional component, which increases the complexity or simply gives the extra kick. And that's exactly how I feel here. A really nice malt, which has given me pleasure for almost an hour now. That's how it should be!

Significantly sulfur, which initially dominates, in my opinion, but very well with the rest of the flavors, as there were: disinfectant, cold smoke, dark caramel, malt candy and moist rock. Approaches to sweet dried fruit and sea air. The nose at least is very consistent! With a lot of time, clear woody notes emerge, while the smoky notes increasingly refer to living fire. Although he does not need time, he knows how to use it. First, heat up a lot of acid before it gets a lot sweeter. Also the ashiness increases. Pretty complex nose! For my taste also very consistent, well spent time.

This impression continues in the mouth. A great flavor conglomerate, harmonious, well-balanced, pleasantly oily mouthfeel, strong onset, simply beautiful. Ash at the beginning, followed by block malt, then a splash of lemon juice, then it is sweet again, behind salty oak, almost tannin-free.

      90 90
In the finish, it first dries off, before it gets sweeter again and leaves plenty of ash on the tongue at the end. He warms up significantly.

added a few drops of water. 7/10. very solid dram that I could drink lots of, but nothing extraordinary. bit too much wood for my taste. needless to say, there is no value to be found here.
    • Nose
not a jot of sulfur In my view. Nice balance of baked goods, fruit, industrial smokiness and salt. Cake batter, salted caramel cookies, putty, roast lamb, gorse, buttery applewood smoke, mint sauce.
    • Taste
arrives with dignity but still a good zip carrying it. dry, woody, more of that lamb and mint sauce, turns a little fruity, fig, apple, all salted, with some rosemary.
    • Finish
long, with lots of pu-erh tea, some smoked guava, ashy, a little iodine.

Has the features of an aged Bowmore. Definitely above average.
    • Nose
      89 89
caramel, black licorice, peat, iodine bandages, bacitracin, citrus
    • Taste
      89 89
oily, yet peaty with licorice, honey, sweet, slight bitter grapefruit (campari-like)
    • Finish
      86 86
some pepper, peat, iodine, not overwhelming but with the warmth.

    Creamy Butter

Adelphi, the independent bottler who has recently also released its very first single malt – Ardnamurchan – bottled this old Bowmore. It’s a refill sherry cask that was filled in 1994 and then matured for a quarter century, yielding just shy of 500 bottles at just over 54% with a color that already makes me smile.

Ah, a dark and sweet nose with all kinds of dried fruit on a bed of candied syrup, toasted oak, cuberdons and farmer’s butter. Even the hint of sulfur at the beginning cannot detract from the goodness. Is there something like ‘good sulfur’? I believe so. For it works in this case. Ashes in the back. This is quite complex.

It’s more of the same on the palate. Creamy butter with a pinch of salt precedes the dark and sweet dried fruit. The smoke develops nicely and the wood delivers some bitter tannins, giving the whole both depth and balance.

The finish starts off sweet, becomes salty and finally leaves your mouth both warm and dry.

Stunning, but I do need a glass of water now. 335 EUR is not cheap for this Bowmore, but what a dram!
