After I was through with the tasting, but still kept a rest in the glass, I poured myself a 52% comparison drip from the bottle of the 2018 25yo opened at Christmas 2018.
The 2019 is more velvety, softer and more fruity than the 2018. Due to the largely absence of smoke, the 2019er approaches the even older bottlings of Laphroaig - 28yo or 30yo - more than the 2018er. On the tongue, the 2018 is a bit tart and less fruity than the 2019. In the finish, both bottlings align again.
As different as the two bottlings are on the nose and on the palate, I see them both equally at a (very) high level.

Oh yes, this aroma of grilled apricot slices that slowly but steadily works its way into the nose, hardly hampered by peat smoke - it can really only be discerned subtly. Soft and not intrusive, reserved, but full of fruit and oak aromas.
Although kelp, algae and salty sea breezes can only be seen at a distance, you still don't feel transported further inland. The sea is in front of the house, only much calmer than usual. Vanilla, honey, warm toffee, milk coffee.

Fantastic start, soft and smooth, with apricots, peaches, melon. More smoky than in the nose, not too intense oak note - but the fruits are dominant. A honey note, almost waxy. Mild dosage of pepper and salt, as well as seaweed, queller, warm tar (just a hint). Dried tobacco leaves, leather, nutmeg. Nougat. The sweet fruit notes remain on the palate for a long time.

Long, soft and velvety with a nice note of grilled apricots. Not a bit bitter, let alone bitter, no intrusive oak note, instead an almost perfect combination of fruit sweetness and mild peat smoke.

Such a bottling is expected to be convincing. I have to say it does that exactly. I am very enthusiastic. It is extremely good in three dimensions: fruit, drinkability and balance. Dangerous combination because this way the bottle won‘t last long. Full review (in german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/02/21/laphroaig-2019-originalabfuellungen-in-fassstaerke/. - but @Archer pretty much nails it anyways ;-)

Not a crisp whisky, but far from a flabby overdone whisky, it sits in that warm buttery middle ground. With a bit of water the fruity richness kicks up a couple of notches as does the smoke. Which is a bit surprising.
    • Nose
Smoke, pear, honey, graham, malt, plastic, herbal spice, strawberry taffy and a touch vegetal.
    • Taste
Vanilla cream, orchard fruit, smoke, honey graham, herbal spice, strawberry taffy, a bit of saline and plastic.
    • Finish
Long -> Smoke, vanilla taffy, honey and Cheerios.
