Whisky Reviews for Benrinnes 2006 AD

So many of the heavily sherried whiskies I've tasted lately have been insanely intense and very dry. This Benrinnes is therefore a nice surprise.
    • Nose
Very fruity, with loads of cherries and forest fruits, and even a hint of raspberry. But it also has a sweet side, mainly nougat and cotton candy. Everything is balanced by a hint of Wasa Whole Grain Crispbread and aceto balsamico.
    • Taste
It has much more of a kick than I expected based on the nose, although nothing too extreme. Notes of leather and oak, as well as nutmeg, but also oatmeal cookies and dark chocolate. Even a touch of aniseed and bitter espresso.
    • Finish
Long and lingering bitterness, with a touch of chocolate.

    Just some stereotypical modern sherry.

scbp-3730, if you like dark chocolate very much, then this wine must be your dish. However, compared to good dark chocolate, it lacks rich texture, complexity, and sweetness. It only emphasizes bitterness.

      Benrinnes 2006 AD #305391
Lots of brand-new leather and lemon-flavored soda, the overall aroma is relatively light, with a little stimulating sensation such as mint, cola, and cooling oil. In addition, it has a slight meaty texture, sweet plum powder, and fresh orange peel. The overall performance tends to be simple and stimulating, with less jerky feeling. 85
    • Taste
      83 83
The entrance is apple jam and some marmalade, followed by pure dark chocolate with strong continuity. In addition, there are some anise and black pepper. The entrance is very oily, the wine is light, the thickness is average, and the flavor profile is relatively simple. 83
    • Finish
      82 82
The bitterness of star anise and grapefruit peel extends to the final rhyme, a little sesame pepper, dark chocolate, and finally some branches and other wild plant smells (similar to isatis root), and some tannins. 82

I had high expectations for this one, unfortunately they weren't met. There's nothing wrong or off with this whisky to be clear. It's just a little boring to me as I've had at least a dozen drams that taste more or less exactly the same. Only the cask is speaking here as the Benrinnes spirit is completely muted and void of character. And Benrinnes DNA + sherry is a winning combo most of the times. So, an okay whisky but not for the money. Get yourself a Signatory Edradour 10yo for half the money and you'd be settled too. At least I've supported a good cause!
    • Nose
Modern sherry with quite some red fruit sweetness. We've got apple, raisin, cherry, blood orange and banana. Then onto custard, strawberry jam, honey, nougat and winegum. Furthermore ginger, whole grain bread, hazelnut, sawdust and some wood glue. This one needed some air to flourish. I like the subtle, nutty touches but as a whole it doesn't really excite me yet.
    • Taste
Pretty much the same as the nose. Very sweet and not much else to it at the beginning. Give it some time to open up. Starting with cranberry, orange, raisin, mango and cherry. After that chocolate sauce, caramel, strawberry jam and cotton candy. Some honey, oak tannin, ginger and nutmeg too. It's okay but doesn't stand out. I surely can't tell it's a Benrinnes.
    • Finish
Sweet and a little drying with icing sugar, marzipan, dark chocolate and nougat but it's gone in seconds.

Cherry, caramel and cranberry. With water it really opens up with coffee candy and blueberry.
    • Finish
      87 87
      Caramel, blackberry and mocha.

Different sherry - same style as cask 305385.
    • Nose
Subdued nose. Apples, mint. Slight raisin, but very little. Green herbs.
    • Taste
Again subdued taste. Herbs, coffee, and sweet liquorice. Sweet chocolate.
    • Finish
      Same notes. Dry.
Overall lacking fruit, depth, and intensity in my opinion.
      Brown sugar.
