    RATING: 86pts – |83 – 86 (B) → Good| — Not a “must”, but a nice-to-have.
    • Nose
      85 85
The nose is powerfully sherried and harmonious with a profile of strong black tea, prunes, mint gum and milk chocolate.
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is bittersweet, massive and spicy with notes of menthol, dark chocolate, caramel and dark dried fruits.
    • Finish
      84 84
The finish is medium to long, well-rounded and fades away slowly with milk chocolate, tannic wood and cloves.

For my first 2 impressions, I thought it was okay - one dimensional and too young (79, and 80). But, the latest time I tried it, from a half-empty bottle (and a different bottle), it was notably more complex and the alcohol was more integrated, but still not perfectly so (still came off a bit too young).

Original Vicks, cherry corn syrup, old unchewed Hubba-Bubba, wintermint, and plywood.

Non-age-statement sherry whisky that needs a long time to open its performances. It's too spicy with dull notes at first, and a few drop of water won't help. Nonetheless it's a decent whisky, especially considering its price.

Cherry, plum, pear, some lemon, smells more like a port and less like a sherry finish, but with the addition of a little water the sherry comes through more clearly.
    • Taste
      88 88
Here the sherry comes out very strongly, especially with the addition of water, very spicy and warm aroma of dark fruits and chocolate, again some lemon in the background.
Could have spent a little longer in the barrel, the alcohol is only moderately integrated.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium-length, pleasant finish with a strong sherry aroma, very spicy and strong undiluted, but too weak diluted.

Strong sherry hit, alcohol, however, noticeable quite strongly, marmalade, exotic spices, jelly, ginger.

A bit too peppery, quite alcoholic.

Arran scored high in my distillery list . The way they do whiskies , how they brand their products and even this Bodega is a 7 years old . One must admit they've done a great job .
    • Nose
Delicate smell of grapes , raisins , figs , cherries , marshmallows . Note that this is not one of those sherry bombs . All just come in a subtle way .
    • Taste
Pale oily touch , spice , pepper , dash of wood tannin with little sweetness , coffee and notes of chocolates , quite a balanced dram with nothing overpowers the other .
    • Finish
Long warmth finish with minerals and a hint of tobacco or cigar rather . This one is a joy .

If I blind taste it, I will not able to tell whether this is a sherry cask whisky. There is a subtle sherry note during nosing, nothing more. Nevertheless, if the mood is right, this dram is good for weekend.

Light. Notes: Citrus, lemon, subtle sherry.
    • Taste
      86 86
Complex and spicy. I can taste different notes one by one. Notes: Citrus, raisin, bread, cracker, sherry.
    • Finish

Short but pleasant. Feels like I just ate a plain bread with raisin.

Sometimes a good finish does not need to be very complex.

Taste: very very sweet, sherry a lot of sherry, caramel, fresh fruits but in the background some dark fruits also, hazelnut (diluted down to about 46-47%: citrus emerges, orange and some menthol)

This arran is packed with flavor and lemony sweetness, delivering a smooth finish. A great whisky matured in first fill casks with an unbeatable value for money.

The Bodega' has been part of the core range of the Arran island distillery since autumn 2019. Only casks from sherry wine cellars in Jerez, Spain were chosen for the single malt. The Bodega was then bottled at natural cask strength.

Not a great Arran bottling. Hoped it would get better as it went along but time and air did nothing extra for it. Big cherry note and some spices followed by a pretty big alcohol burn on the finish. For some reason (perhaps a lack of proper aging) the whole comes across quite discordant. Things just never really mesh, even with the addition of water. Stick with Arran’s rock solid 10yo, or spend up and get the much better integrated 18yo sherry monster.

N : first loads of caramel, actually very close to Don Papa and this is not a compliment. Hopefully it gets a bit over it, on hazelnuts and cereals. Dried figs too. Light dirtyness.

M : sherry (yes), bittersweet. Again with that cheap caramel. Light tobacoo and coffee beans. Touch of lavender too. Better than the Quarter Cask at hiding its age.

F : medium, still caramel but less fake than on the nose. Coffee. Lightly peppered.

Very synthetic like its bourbon sibling and just as capable in terms of showcasing cask influence. I'd say it's also better engineered. But really not my cup of tea. At about 40€, above average 6/10.

  33. hafssol scored this whisky 85 points Expert Junior

An interesting combination of various elements, above the usual natural and light character of Arran’s malt: a young expression, cask strength and - definitely - a prominent sherry influence. No longer being a sherry bomb fan, this one finds a remarkable balance between the flavours carried by the casks and the powerful abv, without showing alcohol edges nor exceeding in fruity sweetness. Both features temper each other in a very pleasant way, mostly displaying warm spicy notes, obviously just rounded by the sherry influence and revealing some slightly bitter hints of oak and dark chocolate.
A solid and fully rewarding malt, that can also meet the taste of those who usually don’t enjoy the result of sherry wood. Another very good trial from the (recently renewed) Arran range.

N: Comes across as rather obviously/blatantly sherried at first, but not so. Given time, it’s far more subtlety sherried with wax capacitors into citrusy [PX-ey?] raisins – an Arran clue there – cello-tape and Airfix glue in the background, red fruits, red apples, fusty fermented/drying leathery umami,… plenty here,…[no sulphur],… needs exploring.

T: Well made whisky with ‘more oloroso over >> PXey Arran‘, I write before Kenny nails it again. How good is he? Excellent is what! Descriptors-wise, we’ve thick fusty sour green confectionary wine gums. Without interfering cask influence, there’s no talk of the seams between cask/spirit – it’s all nicely consolidated. One might argue this is painting by numbers, perhaps, yet the painting is very good. Nothing wrong here.

F: Sour sweet creamy, almost emulsion-thick creamy finish.

C: Around €40 or £50, this is very good. Whilst some of the more established distilleries have struggled with adapting sherry-dependent profiles of their whiskies due to the new generation of sherry casks [Glenfarclas/Highland Park, for example], Arran seem to have found and maintained very decent quality [sherry] casks that suit their spirit, since their establishment in 1995.

I actually find the nose quite interesting. In addition to the sherry there is another resinous note. Of course, everything doesn't seem really old, but okay. In terms of taste, however, it is not for me, as the sherry is also very citrus-heavy (the citrus notes remind me of gin) and does not look very noble. In addition, the wood notes are also a bit clumsy. It's not for me.

Very dry, surprisingly so, in fact. Alcohol is quite strong, and it's lacking body structure, very coarse. Plenty of oak, and really missing sweetness in the mix. Dry dram indeed, with lots of oak and alcohol on top of everything else. Second chew brings mint leaves and even more oak. Very faint hints of sherry notes, but hard to find even when looking for them. Third chew getting even drier, alcohol even more aggressive, and lacking in other flavours.
    • Finish

Nothing new, maybe some sour mash notes develop after 5 minutes, alcohol is coming down, oak and peppery notes lingering, while mint is going away.

A really flavourful young sherry bomb, that compares well against other whiskies in the category. It's on the waxier, Clynelish-y side of Arran, which I really like. Great stuff!

Nose: Sweet and rich. Raisins, orange zest, honeycomb, brown sugar, ginger, cedar.

Not a complex beast, but a pretty good NAS addition to the Arran core range. If you're looking for an A'bunadh substitute (like I was, admittedly), skip this one. This is more spirit driven and less of a 'look at my colour!' whisky. Sure, it's sherried but not overly so. Some youthful notes shine through, which give it a fresh and light feel. Drinks well for its strength and pretty confident at the minor age of 7 years. Still, I think this could use a few years of extra maturation.
    • Nose
A rather friendly nose for a young gun at cask strength. Some alcohol heat but nothing too harsh, with a light mix of sherry, fruits and spice. Apple, citrus, orange juice, banana, pineapple and fig. Very fresh, then some milk chocolate, green winegum, marzipan, glazed doughnut, licorice and fudge. It all is built around a core of malt, hops, honey and almond, with some minerality and pencil shaving in the back. I like it. Sherried but humble, leaving enough space for the original spirit. Which is of good quality for its age.
    • Taste
Still that fresh feel to it and pretty tame on alcohol burn, I expected worse! Granny Smith apple, orange, cherry, fig, apricot and banana, with cacao dusting, pastry, sugar cane, licorice and caramel that make it sweeter than expected. Further on creamy malt, grain, vanilla, honey, oak, pepper and a chalky note. The spirit has lots of playroom here and that is clearly noticeable with grain and spirity notes. Adding water takes away most of the rough edges but makes it a little bitter in return. Probably not one for the sherrybomb hunter, but an excellent introduction to the Arran spirit.
    • Finish
Medium length. Drying with some dark chocolate, orange peel and grain cereal.

Aroma: restrained, sweet-dried fruit, dark raisins, dates, dried apples, citro, menthol tones. The second wave is malt sweetness, white bread, sweet pastries, raw wood, fresh newspaper. Not rich, but fresh and pleasant.

Taste: sweet-spicy, raisins, prunes, dates, burnt caramel, red pepper, a sensation of astringent berry skin on the tongue, sweet orange liquor.

Finish: medium length, dark berries, raisins, zest, burnt caramel, sweetness recedes, grassy notes appear.

    Rating: 85

Bottom line: quite a worthy representative of sherry barrel NASs, with a standard set for this. I would like more complexity and depth, but apparently everything is quite young and the barrels did not have time to work well. Whisky is very soft at all stages, it seems that it is less than the declared fortress.

    (Lot 20 08 19)
APPEARANCE: Between dark copper and medium brown colour.
NOSE: Initially sherry and wood notes, mint and some dried fruits and noticeable oak notes. With some air; dry, baked oak, sawdust, some alcohol, all overpowering the sherry. With more air the sherry cask reappears; vanilla, some dried fruits (quite dry impression), then molasses and some honey. Later dark treacle and dark honey. Dark chocolate. (86-87p) With a few drops of water it feels less oaky, more sherried and slighty older. After my third addition of a few drops it really starts to come around on the nose; oranges, lemons, dried orange rind, fortified sweet wine, some fruit cake, pine needles, mint. (87-88p)
TASTE: The arrival is mainly sherried (on rather dry, dried fruits) but also a bit woody and a bit nippy. On the mid palate a mix of wood / oak sawdust and dried fruits, with a little sweetness towards the end. (85p) With a few drops of water more of the sherry notes come forward. With another few drops, the whisky becomes sweeter, more sherry, less oak. Even better after my third addition of a few drops. Also sweeter. (86p)
FINISH: The finish is peppery, woody and slightly sweet. (84p) With quite a bit of water the finish becomes more civilised, rounder, less woody/peppery, softer. (85p)
OVERALL: Straight after the initial uncorking and undiluted, this presents itself as a quite intensely oaked and sherried, relatively young (5-8 years?) whisky. What it doesn’t do is reveal much of its Arran distillate/origins, although (hard) dilution brings some of it into the light. Several drops of water makes the expression older, more sherried and “smoother”. TOTAL SCORE (for now) 86 points.
I will let this breathe and re-review later, in some 4-12 months time.

Really wanted to like this one but the ABV is not quite right. The alcohol sting is too overpowering.

Good whisky, nice clean sherry casks (no sulphur whatsoever), nicely balanced between sherry and distillery character. Nothing spectacular and quite young, but very okay for the price.

medium, a little sharp, now the youth kicks in, but still quite nice and balanced. Overall a very good effort with a sherried cask strength whisky for a good price - but I did like the old bourbon matured 12yo cask strength from Arran much better, it was more characterful and definitely more bfyb...

Not quite mature, would surely have taken a few more years in the barrel. Overall, however, very nice bottling and still affordable in price.

Sherry Vollreifung in cask strength - I struck there. All in all, my conclusion is cautious.

    Unfortunately, very green sherry.
The malt can not compete with the color in the nose or on the palate.

The Arran lacks depth and you definitely notice the youth. For me a disappointment. Without a doubt, the malt is affordable. But from a Sherry Vollreifung I promise myself much more.

Nose: strong sherry aromas, but they are very fresh. A nice mix of light fruity, citrus and sherry flavors. Flowery, caramel, toasted almonds, hazelnuts, raisins, marzipan, lemon, blood orange, sweetened peppermint tea.

Taste: oily, sweet, great onset, sweet / spicy, he pushes on with schnapps squash, apple juice, dried fig, peach, overripe pear, again the nut corners, milk chocolate.

Finish: Medium long, very sweet, the oak is noticeable, becomes dry but remains sweet and slightly tart, the citrus notes always resonate in the background.

Nice connection of the citrus-freight with the sherry-flavors, the alcohol-strength also fits very well. Not too young and no sulfur. Of that I could imagine a bottle zuzlegen, he is probably not too old, so it lacks in the mMn a bit of depth. Is still delicious

  82. Bam scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

I like it well, the Arran character can compete well with the sherry flavors and the oak, so you have a full, strong, but at the same time fresh whisky. The strong hay / herbal note is very noticeable.
    • Nose
Strong, sweet, but fresh sherry aromas, red apples, grapes, fresh figs. The sherry aromas combine with the Arran citrus character to blood orange. The oak comes up, bringing with it hazelnuts and spices. Cloves and aloe vera. On the other hand a very dominant note between hay and garden herbs.
    • Taste
strong onset, oily mouthfeel, sweet fruits, grapes, sweets (this time the dried) red apples, and the blood orange. Nutty and worthy comes the oak, nougat, cloves, cinnamon.
    • Finish
Medium long, beautiful bittersweet notes, and again a certain freshness, between citrus and menthol. The oak already sounds with dark nougat.

They went deep in the sherry. It's fruity certainly, applesauce and grapes, meringue and cinnamon pie, quince marmalade, but it lacks depth, I think. It is pleasant on the palate nevertheless, very woody, with some spices. We feel that it is quite young, nevertheless the plums and blackcurrant are having a blast, tarte tatin, lemon cream. The finish is not very long, sandy, paprika and saffron, cranberries, currants.
