[April, 2000]  I had this dram during an Ardbeg rarities tasting at Rolandsbogen.  The price of this fine tasting was as low as 180 Deutschmark (90 Euro) plus 70 Deutschmark for an excellent four-course dinner.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 87,5 points.  My notes state it is significantly more punchy (peppery) and much sweeter than the 10-years old guaranteed bottled during the early eighties (WB id 12324).  Due to exydation the nosing profile changes over time.

It was an extraordinary decadent line-up this evening:

Did this one H2H with a modern bottling of the Ten.
In the nose, the new one is more present, more power, more peat. The older one is much more modest, with not that much peat, more soft fruits and sweetness.
In the body the newer one again is more present, stronger, with peat accompanied with caramel sweetness, whereas the older bottling is smoother and more gentle.
In the finish the older one is still smooth, with much more smoke and ash now.
Conclusion: New one is much more present, but the older one definately has its charme. More modest, but fruitier. Two pretty different whisky's though. In a blind tasting, no one would think these are both Ardbeg Ten's.

Not that peaty actualy, kind of gentle and modest. Earthy, some fruits, getting lighter, some citrus. some hints of bonfire smoke now, and subtle sweetness.
    • Taste
      85 85
Again only some modest peat, smooth, soft, a little pepper. Fruits dominate, then more fruits, green grapes. Then some vanilla as well.
    • Finish
      85 85
A bit more pepper now, more peat and sweet smoke now, and some light honey sweetness. Smoke remains, ash. Pretty long now.
