Very fine HP NAS at cask strength. This is powerful stuff - a sneeze inducing whisky if you will - so it needs some water to fully integrate the alcohol. Not very unlike the HP 10 year old, just with alot more oomph and depth of character. Very precise whisky that does not flail its arms, and does what it does very well.

Gooseberry and vanilla very cleanly on first sniff. Then soft creamy oak, lemon and ginger. Underneath is that typical HP maritime peat with salt and moss.
With water: Gets softer and creamier, leather polish, fresh paint, salt spray on old jetty wood. The smoke rises more prominently now with hints of bacon or smoked ham.

Vanilla, bitter oak, creme brulée, spicy ginger, peat and a little bit of lemon juice - pretty consistent with the nose.
With water: Sweeter now and more different wood oils coming out, ginger is softer now, almost towards smoked king prawn in a lemon ginger marinade!

Gooseberries return, smoked ham lingering for a good while in a soily, slightly musty stack of old firewood. Very pleasant departure.

Very exciting and somewhat atypical Highland Park.
Has dirty flavors, how to make love ... engine oil, bacon, smokehouse, car tires ....
Here I was really pleasantly surprised!

Whiskyfun: Some kind of charity bottling, as I understand it. Our dear friends in Scotland seem to be loving both rowing and piping. Colour: gold. Nose: fine smoked barley and cakes. Garden bonfire, scones, and cappuccino. This seems to work… With water: gets chalky, doughy and medicinal, which is typically 'modern HP'. I love modern HP, as long as no useless wood's been in use. So to speak. Mouth (neat): all good, all fine. Limoncello, a touch of crème de menthe, some chalk, then some grape pips oil and some even 'greener' oils. Cider apples. Love this tight greenness. With water: hurray! Perfect saltier lemons and earths, chalk, green teas, smoke… Orkney rowers have it good. Finish: pristine well-chiselled smoky, mineral and coastal barleyness. Riiiight up my alley. Even nicer, grapefruit in the aftertaste; that just always works. Comments: I think I've found a new hobby: rowing. Does that work glass-in-hand? Anyway, I am ready for Henley! This wee OB's on the heels of the brilliant G&M… SGP:453 - 89 points. http://www.whiskyfun.com/

Great NAS expression from Highland Park here. Very enjoyable and classic HP. Comparing to the new "Robust & Intense" (WB#166530) that I reviewed yesterday, this one is just so much better. No idea why this one didn't become the core NAS cask strength expression.

Classic HP, and much better than the one I reviewed yesterday. A bit of brine, light smoke, heather, fresh hay, a bit of toffee. Some sherry notes as well, dried fruits and furniture polish, so hard to believe this is only first fill bourbon casks. Some dried herbs show up as well. Great start to this one.

Strong alcohol, which comes down quickly to show a peppery warmth. Good sweetness, and a good dose of smoke. It's cane sugar sweetness with some sweet carrots, and heathery smoke. Then we get some bitter notes of freshly cut grass, and now in the nose there are new notes of sawdust and freshly sanded wood. Second chew shows a much more fat and oily texture, a great mouthfeel. Sweetness is still going strong, but it's a great balance against the alcohol and smoky notes. Now also showing up are roasted chestnuts, slightly burnt caramel, pickled ginger, and mint. Third chew shows less sweetness, more smoke and wood spices - cloves, nutmeg - and it's a bit drier. Lingering notes are pickled ginger, light oak, and dry hay. Surprisingly good.

Sweetness is down nicely, it leaves notes of unsweetened sponge cake with smoke, light roasted bananas, a bit of dried herbs, mint, and ginger. Nice and medium long finish, which just gets a bit watery after a good while.

    Nose:

very large impact of bourbon barrels, vanilla, very smoky, reminds me a bit of Springbank 10, but smoke plays a greater role here, citruses, furniture paste

    Taste:

apples, citrus, bonfire, vanilla, wood, alcohol perceptible, however, do not interfere with reception

    Finish:

surprisingly long considering the fact that it is probably a couple-year-old no-age statement whisky, here comes the most smoke, tires, bonfire, ash, citrus, by far the strongest part of this dram

    Score:

in my opinion a very unusual Highland Park, quite solid comparing to other young NAS bottlings - 87/100
