Ignore the PR and it’s passable.

I think this is the moment Macallan finally jumped the shark. There was the hilariously bad Icarus advert a while back, what a fatuous pile of twaddle that was. It as also extremely expensive, being banned for 'Promoting Risky Behavior' (a nonsense but very real ruling). But now, now we have Edition no.5 partnered with Pantone®.

I love Macallan, I really do, the previous style 10 Sherry Oak is brilliant (and the previous 4 Editions have been great, especially the amazing no.2). I love Pantone and use their system every week (I’m a designer) but this is a partnership that could only be cooked up by a marketing person.

Let’s just cut to the chase, as it stands this fifth release is less good than the others in all the important areas. How it smells and how it tastes. To add to the woes the story behind it makes it feel pretentious, even for Macallan.

On the nose it’s a dialled down version of no3. Weirdly, at 48% the nose is very slow to develop in the same way the others did.

In the mouth it it beautifully bolted together, very smooth and delicate but perhaps a little underwhelming (is this the wood choices hampering the character?). It tastes like a Macallan, it has all the hallmarks but rather than it exciting the palate it merely comforts it. Not always a bad thing of course, but I have come to expect more from Edition bottlings.

In a vertical at the Whisky Show London with the Estate Reserve, the 18 Triple Cask and the Rare Cask, this stumbled in last. I can hear the shouts of 'they're all twice the price!' - but when did price ever guarantee quality? Price is more usually and more reliably an indicator of rarity than anything else. So to be fair, it’s not that it was a bad whisky by any measure but for this price there’s much better fun to be had elsewhere.

Bring back edition 2! or more realistically, roll on No.6.

    Pantone

I have missed the Edition No 1 and by now it has become so expensive that I’ll probably never get to try it. Edition No 2, a collaboration with the chefs of the world famous Spanish restaurant El Cellar de Can Roca was outstanding imho. Edition No 3, with a little help from Master Perfumer Roja Dova was also very good. For Edition No 4 Macallan’s Bob Delgarno himself selected an enormous amount of casks which resulted in a release of some 300.000 bottles, but taste wise it did not come close to the previous editions. Soon the sixth will be upon us, but I dusted off my sample of the Edition No 5 to give that a go. For this release Macallan worked together with… errr… Pantone, the company from New Jersey that is specialized in… colors. Not sure what that has to do with the whisky itself, as it was only a unique color that was created for the packaging. No less than 525 (!) casks were used for this vatting, making this a limited edition – say what? – of 260.000 bottles… It comes as no surprise that this one is still easy to find.

The nose needs a bit of time, but then develops in to an elegant mix of sultanas, pear syrup, toffee and ginger. There is also a lovely floral note, joined by some more dry notes of oak. The peel of oranges kicks in with a vengeance – I quite like that – while leather polish makes a grand entrance.

Oily and sweet, but also quite peppery on the palate. Oranges and ginger return and precede raisins and nuts. Sweet malt, flowery honey, fresh figs and pear syrup. Hint of cold espresso. The spices keep your mouth warm throughout.

The finish is it’s forte: very long, softly drying spiciness and some dark chocolate at the death.

My Dark Side went looking for flaws in this whisky, but honesty urges me to admit that this is simply another great Macallan.

PS. Should any of you have the Edition No 1 open and is willing to sell me a sample: yes, please!

    Drinkable but boring

  4. BenNevis scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

This is quite sweet, More American oak influence than you would expect in older Macallans. There is sherry and a Macallan style to this but for me the vanilla sweetness comes though to much. If this was £50 a bottle I still wouldn't buy another. Its nice but over priced.

N- Elegant (perhaps by the effect of the packaging), not a nose packed monster, but quintessential a Macallan with well curated aroma to reflect on the soft savoury sweet sherry nuances, aged fine oak that lace a dry layer and letting the spicy toffee, pickled ginger and pink peppercorn to shines. Comfort, rounded but lack depth to further excites a seasoned nose. (87/21)

P- Velvet with rising smogs of strength with pear candy. Hints of leather, full, solid spicy oak and creamy. Orange fondant developed, sweet toffee, coffee and bitter ale. (89/22)

F- Finishing probably the star of this Edition. Long, lasting and smooth, finely starchy with good weight on the palate. Full with amicable spiciness that comes with hint of espresso and bitter mint chocolate. (93/23)

B/B- 91/22 Excellent value at current, but price will surely hit the roof towards the end of stock availability.

The combination of creamy, fruity and mineral-industrial notes, alas, is not very harmonious, in addition to inappropriate cardboard, dust and tablet bitterness, there is generally no feeling of integrity and unity, instead of them there is some discord and incompleteness.
    • Nose
      Open, moist, sweet creamy and fruity notes, dirty and dusty dried fruits - dried apricots, raisins; light beer shades, sulfur-mineral tones, cream, fruit ice cream, leather goods, a little carpentry workshop, wood dust;
    • Taste
Light, calm, sweetness, oak and sulfur-mineral shades, daikon, ginger, dried fruits, light bitterness of young bark, cardboard and dust, tablet bitterness.
    • Finish
Light, warming, oak, fruity notes, creamy tones - condensed milk, toffee, fudge; dirty dried fruits, tablet bitterness.

Why is the score so low? Ask yourself, this is the perfect whisky. Is it because there are 260,000 bottles? This score should not be lower than 90.

  13. The_Osprey scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

Macallan Edition 5, 48.5%. Has a fairly natural-looking colour. Aroma is chewed bread, squeeze of lemon, white untoasted bread crusts with marmalade, maybe some old dried apricot, papery oak, dried lemongrass, damp oak. Some faint Slush Puppie later on. Taste is salty up front, a little more rough and abrasive than I was anticipating, again that breadiness that is present in several Speyside distilleries' characters but very prominent here, spirit-led flavour, not that much sherry cask character and even less European oak. Quite a spicy oak vibe suggesting older refill casks. Any first fill casks must be in the minority here. Bready and spicy all over. Quite a confusing one for me. A decent example of a Speyside whisky. Is that all that was intended to be achieved from this statement, showpiece, expensive NAS? Nothing out of the ordinary and better can be had far cheaper but I enjoyed the dram. 3.4/81

This is interesting, compared to the other Macallans and series I have had this is more spice forward. Still tasty and unmistakably Macallan (great sherry casks).

Dark rich Nutty sherry, light spice, caramel, nougat
    • Taste

    • Finish

The ginger and sherry work well keeping the heat and sweet flavors going, caramel and berries end it
