Seeing reviews such as Serge's over the past few years made me (/us) think that the quality of Lagavulin's DE was indeed dropping but I never fact-checked this for myself, I was just believing it.

Seems like I wasn't so right : this is still really excellent. compared to the 1996-2012 for example (which is the one I know best), this might be less subtle and complex in its aromas, but it's *certainly not* sweeter, more PX-driven or more "doctored" or anything. This feels noticeably stronger than 43% on the palate, with a really big presence. And flavour-wise, this has plenty of the coastal grit I love, and absolutely not an over-presence of raisins, fudge or anything like that.

So, long story short : as much as you possibly can, dont just believe ; try things ! And make an opinion for yourself !

Very tasty smoker, sherry is integrated nice and soft. A little more time in the glass is good for it and it becomes softer, ash aromas are then as good as gone
    • Nose
Smoky, campfire, lots of sherry, spicy, citrus fruits, slightly maritime notes
    • Taste
Ash, smoky, light sherry flavor that gets stronger after a while. Slightly sweet spicy notes, sweetness becomes stronger and dried fruits emerge
    • Finish
Smoke, smoked ham, spicy oak notes, slightly fruity sweet, sherry is only very easily perceptible

The last one I bought was the 1999. This one has a cleaner fruitiness than that one.
    • Nose
      Cranberry, plum, peat and apple.
    • Taste
      Peat, cranberry, cherry and gingerbread.
    • Finish
      Peat, cranberry, gingerbread and rhubarb.

head to head with last year´s expression I find the 2019 is a little dryer with less sherry impact. perhaps a little more liquorice, a little more smoke and soot in the newer version.
Hard to say which one I like more! Perhaps the newer.
