    Good to average smoky Islay standard. For the price, around € 44 upwards, a bit expensive.

    camp smoke, brine and sweetness. Honey glazed ham, toffee. Apple and pears. More smoke and peat on the palate. Nice initial burst of flavour on the mouth but predictable short finish with the 43% abv.

    A 10-year-old peated Bunnahabhain. 43% / Natural Color / Non Chillfiltered

    N: Sweet and creamy. Wonderfully round. Sea salt, seaweed and citrus zest. Shortbread and some pears. Everything wrapped in a nice cold peat smoke. (88)

    P: Lime, lemons, liquorice and shortbread. Silky and soft. Sweet and very oily texture. Some toffee and vanilla perhaps from the casks. Ash. Sea salt. And that wonderful cold peat smoke again. (89)

    F: Long and pleasant. Oak spices and a nice campfire smoke after the fire has been extinguished and you are smelling into the smoldering ash. (86)

    A simple, yet enjoyable, entry level peated Islay malt that has been too much watered down. In my opinion, this needed to be bottled at least at 46% ABV. I am missing the oilyness (it's been probably chill filltered). The peat/smoke is quite restrained, slightly medicinal with a recognizable seaweed note. Pretty much one dimensional. Basic sweetness (honey, faint vanilla, caramel, no specific fruits) combined with a light to medium smoke. I can't locate any citrus note. There is a very light maltyness and also saltyness. Yes, it's drinkable, but I wouldn't buy a second bottle of it...

    COLOUR: straw (without FS)
    - a surprisingly good 10y Bunna and a very tasty one
    Representative from the DISCOVERY series by G&M
    - I didn't expect it, much better than a Lappi 10,
    fully on par with Ardbeg TEN
    - a good PLV for just under €50
    - sometimes a completely different direction than, for example, the
    Standard 12 y.
    - worth trying
    • Nose
      slightly sweet, shortbread, shortbread, lemon, subtly smoky, young
    • Taste
      silky soft harmonious smoky attack, sweet-buttery, toffee, fudge, grapefruit, pleasantly present (but not dominant) cold smoke
    • Finish
      medium-long, soft, smoky finish;
      medium-long light aftertaste with ash aromas

    An "inexpensive", very tasty, wonderfully smoky Bunnahabhain - this independent easily leaves many original Islay bottlings of the same age behind...
    [color:] = straw;
    • Nose
      slightly sweet, shortbread, shortbread, lemon, subtle aromatic smoke, looks young;
    • Taste
      silky soft, harmonious, smoky, sweet and buttery, toffee, fudge, grapefruit, pleasant but not dominant cold smoke;
    • Finish
      medium to long, sweet, cold smoke, ash;

    • Finish
      Long and soft finish with complex oak spices, campfire smoke.

    Wet Sand

    In their Discovery range Gordon & Macphail offer approachable entry level malts and today I’ll put two of those to the test, both for the Islay distillery of Bunnahabhain. Both are quite young, but one matured on a bourbon cask, while the other slept on a sherry cask. I’ll start with the 10 years old on bourbon.

    On the nose it is immediately clear that this is peated Bunna on sweet malt, cured meat, sea fruit and wet sand. Some paprika powder, charcoal and a medicinal note. Iodine and burn ointment.

    Nicely mouth coating and a lot sweeter than the nose promised. Toffee, barley sugar and liquorice. The salty edge returns and the peat smoke becomes relatively dominant. Nice balance.

    The finish is long, sweet versus salty with lots of notes of charred wood.

    Not really entry level in my book. Much better in fact. And more interesting. Very entertaining Bunna, around 50 EUR.
