  1. lachaineduwhisky did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Liquorous, on the nose, with sweets that are difficult to extricate.
Sensitive sherry in the mouth, a bit sulfur, but which interferes in a strange way with the freshest fruits typical of Penderyn.

    Enthusiasm 2/5

    Whisky n ° 2168

  2. FritzeKrautman scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

The nose is quite good, but not outstanding. The rest is reasonable. Wouldn't encourage me to buy now, but wouldn't be a disappointment either.

"Rhiannon" is the name of the new single malt whisky, which means "great queen" or "divine queen". This powerful lady was a horse goddess, an enchantress with magical powers, whose legend is told in "Four Branches of the Mabinogi" or "Pedair Cainc Y Mabinogi" , the oldest prose work of Britain, as Penderyn explains.

Penderyn "Rhiannon", 46% alc. Original bottling (Icons of Wales No. 7, 2019). Maturation: maturing in sherry barrels

Nose: Sweet and sourly fruity, I especially notice currants, but also unripe apricots. There are also distinct herbal notes mixed with tree resin and glue aromas, very interesting. Various nuts and some maple syrup can be found in the background.

Palate: Thick and bitter, slightly fruity and quite sweet. First I have to think of mild coffee, maybe even milk coffee. Then there are currants again, figs and dates, as well as a good portion of pepper with a slight spiciness.

Finish: medium long, slightly dry. Caramel and currants dominate, with ginger towards the end.

Conclusion: Definitely a special whisky with a clear mixture of sour aromas and bitterness, but also a very pleasant sweetness. Not badly done. 82/100 points (2021).

Starting sweet with some fruits. Vanilla, caramel, fudge and brown sugar complement each other very well! Next some caramelized apple and a little raisin. At the end notes of oak, cut flowers and some ginger.
    • Taste
      83 83
Sweet notes like brown sugar, caramel, applecrumble and a little hint of marzipan. Great spicy and bitter notes like cinnamon, ginger and chai tea, complemented by bitter macarons and barley.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium-long. The bitterness stays for a bit. This with bitter macarons, oak and some cinnamon. Also a little hint of vanilla.

A bitter note, on the ginger ale. Wood glue. It's quite mineral, rocky, with some rare herbs. A slight sweetness in the background, on the soft caramel, the quince paste. Icy brown. A few touches of iodine, citrus, which will eventually dominate. Dried fig. In the mouth, it starts with lemon, limestone, ginger, a hint of lychee, wood. But it's light overall. The finish is quite long, syrupy. A hint of acid and vanilla. Wood and charcoal peels.

Not a lot of scent, sadly. They missed the mark, I feel. Some hints of brown sugar and marzipan, but that's it.
    • Taste
      84 84
Contrary to the scent, the taste blew me away. Quite soft and tastes like ripe banana, sugary, sweet syrup, and a hint of orange. Reminded me of drinking glühwein in winter. A warm and soft taste, without the threat of it being overwhelming.
    • Finish
      79 79
A tad smoky, a warm aftertaste. Similar to the sensation of a nice, cozy blanket covering you on a cold winter's eve, that slowly slides off of your body with a bit of lingering heat. A hint of some glühwein herbs. Could have been a bit more smoky for my personal tastes.

The nose is definitely the highlight here, apart from the slight adhesive note. Then it goes down.
On the palate, this bottling is very alcoholic and also very bitter.
But if you like black currants and Swedish herbs, this could be the right place for you.
    • Nose
      84 84
Interesting and unusual in the aroma. Limes, some glue, dried meadow herbs, passion fruit, quinces, a touch of vanilla and oak spice, ginger, caramel, raspberries and black currants.
    • Taste
      79 79
      Sweet, hot, bitter.
Black currants, Swedish herbs, oranges, Manuka honey, caramel, limes, passion fruit.
    • Finish
      79 79
Medium-long finish. The strong bitterness remains, along with black currants and a little honey and vanilla.

It's a bit too one-dimensional too warrant a higher score, but the Penderyn Rhiannon is a satisfying whisky nonetheless.
    • Nose
Soft notes of raspberries and strawberry liqueur, as well as some melted butter, cassis and candy canes. Hints of peanut skins and pastries. Needless to say it is very sweet.
    • Taste
More sweetness on the arrival and pretty much a continuation of the nose. Plenty of berries, but also some caramel sweetness. The wood has also infused some spiciness.
    • Finish
      Lingering sweetness. Somewhat drying.

  15. Robinzon25 scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Bright, berry, completely non-trivial whisky with a good balance, very distinctive, with the characteristic features of a distillery. I feel the basis - light, not very expressive, a little perfume new Penderin.
    • Nose
In the foreground, in the aroma, dried berries (chokeberry), dried fruits (prunes, figs) and grass gathering are felt. Unobtrusive shades of rye bread, cardboard and plastic deepened. But this does not spoil the overall picture of the fragrance.
    • Taste
Light, lively, with notes of dried fruit compote and herbal tea, with delicate tannins.
    • Finish
Sufficiently long, juicy, with a huge content of dried fruits and dried berries, with hints of herbal tea and peppermint candies.

  16. Whisky-Connaisseur did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

A delicious, fruity single malt from Wales with creamy toffee, gentle sweetness and warming spiciness. Already balanced and ideally bottled at 46% abv. This dram can be drunk without the addition of water in a cosy atmosphere with full enjoyment.

I thank Penderyn Distillery and Schlumberger Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Sweet and spicy on the nose with vanilla, apricots, red currants, some sultanas and oak. Then toffee arrives, followed by a touch of marzipan and notes of pine resin in the back.
    • Taste
Bold and sweet on the palate with toffee and figs. Then a warming spiciness emerges with black pepper and oak. Once the warmth fades, fruity notes of red currants and juicy peaches arive, lingering with creamy vanilla and subtle mocha towards the finish.
    • Finish
The finish is long, sweet and creamy with spiced oak and subtle dry tannins on the tail.

With water: Becomes spicier on the nose (oak, pepper) when a few drops of water are added. Still creamy and fruity with vanilla and some notes of red berries. The sweetness on the palate is a bit tamed while more sour notes of red currants are coming through. Peppery on the midpalate but less spicy when diluted. The finish is a bit shorter with more spiced oak and tannins coming through.
