[April, 2017]  ...continuing my CGBP-project (The "Cadenhead Green Bottle Period"
lasted from mid-1991 until mid-1998 and is characterised by its small
size white labels). Glenlochy is another one of the lost distilleries from 1983 when the last big whisky bust started.  You know why this happened?  Most people do not but it is a good lecture on how quickly things can change...  During the seventies of the last century a significant whisky boom happened most prominently in the US.  But all of a sudden a new health movement started in California at the beginning of the eighties and spreaded quickly over all other states.  You know, this was the time when Hollywood banned smoking and drinking from most of its movies.  Within two years the whisky sales in the US dropped by almost 50 (!!!) per cent - and the US was by far the most important Scotch whisky market.  As a consequence many Scottish distilleries were closed (among them Banff, Dallas Dhu, Glen Albyn, Glen Mhor, Glenlochy, Millburn, Genugie, Glenury, North Port, Port Ellen, St. Magdalene).  And the production of all other distilleries was cut back, that is why they ran into supply shortage problems after the recent boom started at the beginning of the new millennium (most prominently Macallan, hence they switched to NAS editions)...

This dram is quite nice, especially with some drops of water added.  It unfolds a delicate fruitiness after that (pls. see detailed notes of other members below that I can fully agree with).  Except I do not get a bitter note in the finish.  It is a very sippable and easy-to-explore dram, recommended to rookies too...

A lot of Cadenhead bottles of the 1990's can be really harsh and acid. This Glenlochy has a subtle fruity estery edge which makes it very nice and enjoyable.
    • Nose
Zesty to start with. Citrus fruits. Orange peel. Grassy notes. Heather and lavender. Also wet stones and a touch of vanilla.
    • Taste
Very fruity. Lemon and lime. Pineapple cubes. Cider apples. Acidic but in a gentle way. Some sweet barley. It's all quite waxy.
    • Finish
Long. Peppery. A little honey. Spearmint. Becomes more bitter at the end.

Nose - A little more vanilla now but the sweet fruit remains.

Palate - Grapefruit is the most obvious fruit now but still some lemon sherbert.

Finish - Still a good length with a few drops of water. Not a great whisky and not very complex but I did enjoy it and worth trying.
    • Nose
Lemon citrus, some honey. honeycomb, grapefruit, a touch of vanilla.
    • Taste
Sherbert, slightly prickly, vanilla again, honey then gets a little dryer after the fruity sweetness up front.
    • Finish
Long, still on lemon and honey.
