    In store sample.

Younger AnCnoc can sometimes be a little over the top floral for my liking. This one is not overly floral, but a little heavy handed on vanilla and spice. It’s not bad, but a little one dimensional and boring to me. Some people like this style, I do not.
    • Nose
      82 82
Prickly, white pepper, vanilla, grain, fresh flowers, a drop of honey.
    • Taste
      82 82
This type of mouthfeel loses my interest. It offers no substance. Just thin, spicy, vanilla. Behind the dominant notes there’s flowers, pine, a drop of honey.
    • Finish
      80 80
Hot. Spicy (white pepper). Oak. Vanilla.

    S 7
A pleasantly floral, almost caramelised peated whisky. Peat is mild but there's an ample amount of smoke. This is around 40 ppm using peat from England.

    N 25
    - Caramel butterscotch
    - Floral & smoky
    - Mildly charred oak
    - Hint of oil behind

    P 25
    - Dried red apple transforming into a sherry-like dried fruit note
    - Prominent spice
    - Smoked meat

    F 25
    - Mid finish
    - Limited peat smoke
    - Winter spice lingering

Tasty stuff! It reminds me quite a lot of Balvenie 12 Single Barrel, but with more tropical fruit, oak, and that particular rounded nutty note. It has a bit of heat going on, but nothing too extreme. I like the luscious tropical sweetness and rich buttery notes. That nutty element is interesting, almost earthy, and adds an extra dimension. All in all, a well-made bourbon-cask whisky.
    • Nose
Bright and fresh. Loads of fresh fruit: green apple, pear, pineapple, and (especially) coconut. Rich vanilla custard, caramel, white chocolate, buttercream, toasted nuts, and nougat. There’s a supple pizza-dough flavour in there, as well as some caramel popcorn. Some slightly savoury notes of new leather and cut grass.
    • Taste
Medium-thick texture. A bit tart up front, with fresh lemon, green apple, and more grass. This gives way to honey, then caramel and a big dose of tropical fruit. A good amount of heat in here, maybe banana peppers. Sweet cereals in the middle: pizza dough, sugary wort, and butter. It develops to rich, savoury nuts, maybe toasted walnuts, then charred oak, some leather, black pepper, and light tobacco. Quite an extended development.
    • Finish
Medium-length. The heat and oak lift back to sweetness. Caramel apple, pineapple, coconut, cinnamon, nutmeg, a hint of bubblegum, and more white chocolate. A syrupy cola flavour appears here. Honey and ginger on the back end.

A complicated, edgy whisky, but when you get adventurous with your pipette (or teaspoon), this is a veritable treasure chest. At times, it performs like an older malt, at others, it's super lively and fresh. A shapeshifter, if you will, but definitely worth it. Just a few centiliters will go a long way toward keeping you busy, puzzled, and entertained.
    • Nose
      88 88
Very sweet and oily - perhaps even waxy - without water, but the alcohol does intrude a bit. You immediately notice that the casks that have gone into this have been pretty active and of good quality. Noses older than 16; only the alcoholic nip and a soft fermentary note tip you off to its actual age.
With water, it loses immediate intensity but gains depth and complexity. Now there are essential oils, herbals (eukalyptus and rosemary), arboreal aromas (pine and fir), and more varied citrus fruits (pink grapefruit and blood orange). H2O also brings out a soft idea of wood smoke - probably a byproduct of the recharred casks.
Sidenote: this *really* takes a lot of water, and it keeps improving in the process, so don't be afraid when adding some more. And more. And more...
    • Taste
      88 88
Without water, the sheer intensity of the active American oak casks is almost overwhelming. On the plus side, the onslaught of wood oils and spices creates the impression of a much older malt (blind, I might've even guessed 18-20 years). On the downside, the peppery / gingery bite and tannic tartness is really too much to bear to let it linger in the mouth for a prolonged period of time.
With water, it remains zesty and spicy (and tart, initially, until you add enough water), but the bite becomes manageable. Once it's down to comfortable drinking strength, it may have lost some of the unique, over-the-top woody goodness, but the added creamy sweetness (ah, there it is, after more than three teaspoons) and dialed-up fruitiness (grape, lime, bitter orange, unripe pineapple) more than make up for it.

Sour fruits, tart tannins and high-quality American oak. Still no sweetie, but that comes with the territory. It's that kind of style.

very tasty malt. Quite spicy due to the high alcohol content but well integrated. Very tasty and tasty.
    • Nose
intense nose, very spicy with lots of light fruits, the alcohol is clearly noticeable, herbs and floral notes, light vanilla in the background
    • Taste
powerful, fruity, sweet start, sweet with vanilla and caramel, lots of light fruits, very intense, spicy. Slightly nutty
    • Finish
spicy fruity finish, also here very intense and bitterly sweet with vanilla and slightly nutty. Quite long

    Ralfy review 832: (87/100).

"As soon as you add water it becomes more floral, becomes more fragrant. ... When you taste it, clean, crisp, hugely expressive. A very, very different permutation of Scotch single malt whisky."

A fresh and clean delivery of apples, citrus, and vanilla. Seems to be the perfect spring/summer dram. Finish lingers with oak spiciness and honey.

Certainly a fruity delight for a hotter day.

young strong whisky, it is better not to look at the label, so as not to be upset ... sadly.

fruits in basket and caramel, and a little barley well dried!
the mouth lets the alcohol explode, it stings a little, then pastry sensation, lemon, vanilla and full of exotic fruits, amplified by spices
a little dry wood, lemon vanilla again and the fruits coming back.
Interesting finish with exotic fresh fruit, wood and sweet caramel.

with water: yes, it carries very good water, so you should not be too frugal. The malt opens, becomes much sweeter, creamier, fuller and more complex. Especially in the taste, where it looks completely undiluted completely closed and the tongue almost overwhelmed

Conclusion: a great dram with water, but for the 125th birthday one would have rather hoped for a real blast. Yes, the great, but somehow just "normal" - even if it combines everything in itself, what I like about this distillery so much

Pineapple-dusted pineapple, yellow and ripe apples, vanilla, butterscotch, the oak gives a few spices (subtly nutty), coconut cream, the alcohol is very well integrated
    • Taste
      86 86
quite strong alcohol, hardly sweet, fruity, coconut, vanilla, strong oak, peppery alcohol
    • Finish
      87 87
medium to long, coconut-almond cream, here again sweeter, the oak is also clearly present, but not as strong as in the taste
