Whisky Reviews for Speyside Distillery 1996 WhB

At first I scored it 88 but after spending a time with it its 84 now. Simply this is just a mono dimensional whisky but not bad one. The age is very hard to detect. It lacks depth and definition. Hope it will improve with time
    • Nose
      86 86
Elegant sweetish nose that transfers to salted peanuts after while and then back to sweet clean sherry, Pear drops, but not much else. Not much heat on the nose though and the whole smells like candy. Cannot detect the wood
    • Taste
      84 84
Arrival is hot and not much development. It goes to sherry profile but bright side one, More PX than oloroso, sugars, cotton candy, pear drops, New make, spice and heat. I was hoping for the heat to dissipate with aeration but it doesn't change much with time.
    • Finish
      82 82
Hot, sherry notes, stone fruits, not very entertaining ( alcoholic ) and echoing for a while

The vanilla yoghurt in the nose is really extraordinary, and I really like it. Unfortunately, the whisky also has a few flaws (quark, sulfur), and apart from the very nice refill sherry character unfortunately not much to offer.
    • Nose
Very strong and dark nose, plums, milk chocolate, coffee beans. Behind it rather unusual flavors, vanilla yoghurt, quark, cheese and yeast. Apple Cake. Something sulfur.
    • Taste
Middle start. Strong vanilla and caramel, apples and honey. The oak takes over slowly, becomes spicier, forest honey, dark nougat.
    • Finish
Medium. Strong oak, milk coffee, vanilla, dark chocolate.

Tannins and wood spice, cigar smoke and some cough syrup. Caramelized herbs. Wood smoke. Somehow old school. Really not if you try it again and give it a real chance!

Not bad for the price but could be better for the age. Perhaps not an amazing cask but still quite delicious. Not overly complex. Half a teaspoon of water seems to bring out the best in it.
    • Nose
      85 85
Dried fruit, cherry, dark chocolate, vineous, caramel, mint, something musty that's not entirely pleasant but doesn't spoil it. Slight minerality too.
    • Taste
      87 87
Tasted neat it's a bit hot, surprisingly so for the age. With a small amount of water the arrival is mellow, developing at a nice pace, spicy-wood, more raisins. Falls apart with too much water.
    • Finish
      86 86
Wood, sage, leather, slightly bitter but not unpleasant.

    • Finish
      88 88
      mild, pleasant and long-lasting
