Whisky Reviews for Clynelish 14-year-old

    (Lot L9023, bottled 23.01.2019. Tasted 04.11.2019)
NOSE: Very fruity, a veritable fruit salad of orchard and tropical fruits; yellow & red apples, oranges, mangos, pineapple. Then sweet malt notes, with cereal, light honey and lightly heated/roasted grains.
With more time the fruit subsides a bit and the nose becomes drier. There’s still a god dose of malt but now also more noticeable alcohol and some petroleum. (88-89p)
TASTE: Much more austere than what the nose indicated. Malty but rather dry, although there is some oiliness and waxiness. Notes of petroleum wax. Mild wood spice/pepper. Interesting but one dimensional? (86p)
EXIT: Medium oily (waxy?) and medium wood pepper. With more time; more pepper. (84p)
The nose has benefited from oxidisation for several months since the opening of the bottle.
    TOTAL SCORE: 86 points.

    Appearance: Medium golden.

Nose: Heather honey, butterscotch, hay, herbs, touch of mint, oak, lemon. It is called waxy and I can see why. Pineapple.

Palate: Sweet honey, citrus, vanilla, leather. Wax. A light touch of peat. Also somewhat salty.
    Big pineapple too.

Finish: Waxy, spicy, honey and vanilla. Oak tannins. Pepper. Tiny bit of smoke.

With Water: Not really necessary. A bit more butterscotch comes out. Lemony.

Overall: The peat is almost hidden. A light, bright malt, sweet with vanilla and honey. Straightforward and very tasty, if a bit simple.

  3. whisky_garage scored this whisky 86 points Expert Junior

Aroma: Open, bright, fresh sweet. Vanilla, soy pear, Grini apples, ripe sweet berries, citrus fruits. Honey in combs, or rather honeycombs. Sea breeze, spicy spices.

Taste: Bright, sweet - peppery. Vanilla, citrus, light minerality, fruit and berry theme, soapy notes. Generally repeats the aroma????.

Finish: Medium, sweet - peppery. Vanilla, citrus zest, cocoa, spices, wood.

Conclusion: Solid middling, with a good balance, quite bright and saturated.
