  1. Official tasting note

Nose: Rich fruity nose. Dried fruits with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Palate: Thick and chewy, obvious sherry influence but still with some toffee in the background. Dark chocolate shavings with raspberries and dark cherries.

Finish: Long dry sherry notes with some marzipan and maraschino cherries and gingerbread.

[Sep 19 outturn tasting - quick note] My tastebuds are getting tired at this point but still, this doesn't lack character and flavour.
    • Nose
Apricots, slight rubber touches, and a meaty side. The sherry influence is noticeable, but not overwhelming.
    • Taste
Quite dry initially with an alcohol kick that transitions to apricots again, some red fruits and a light rubbery touch again, not too bugging.

Floral. Sherry and yellow fruits. Restrained and slightly alcoholic nose.
    • Taste
      87 87
Oily. Citruses, honey, forest fruits, spicy oak and sherry.
    • Finish

      Medium length, spicy, fruity.

this is my first balblair and i am somehow a bit disappointed. for me it is rather flat and the young age bothers me a bit (in the taste, not the age itself)
    • Nose
metallic youth, creamy, milk chocolate, maybe some mineral notes? floral with some rubber
    • Taste
powerful start, bright fruit, not very complex though
    • Finish
      very distint finish

An unusual sherry maturation, complex for its young age, with a delightful nose.
    • Nose
      88 88
Porridge, honey, and the merest whiff of new-make to remind you of its youth. Develops over time into something vegetal and meaty: a remarkable resemblance to Cypriot stuffed vine leaves!
    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet and sour arrival, but not the classic sherry profile: more floral, with medicinal herbs, hay, and lemon. Oily and mouth-coating.
    • Finish
      81 81
Fairly long, grapefruit moving to pepper.

“What’s next?”, asks our excellent host. My eye catches Balblair on the menu, and the choice is made.

C: This young Cadenhead bottling has proved more popular amongst Whiskybase reviewers than with our small group tonight. For me, in relation to today’s long and varied drams, this appears edgy and gacky. The end of those fabulous official vintages was a big loss. It would seem those releases were the family jewels of the distillery.

Versatile and rich whisky, powerful and intense. Allthough the sherrycask maturation, this is not a typical sherrybomb. But very enjoyable indeed, with the nose being the most interesting part.
    • Nose

A full scent immediately, fruity, apricots. But even some mustard?! Also a creamy or buttery kind of aroma. Then some baked salmon, and suddenly it turns into a moral floral side. Very versatile nose, and very interesting.
    • Taste
      88 88
Strong, a lot of pepper, pickering. Sweet and fruity, some honey, peach, citrus. Very intense. Some chocolate as well.
    • Finish
      87 87
Still very strong, pickering, peach, milkchocolate, pretty long finish.

Balblair 8 yo 2011/2019 (57.8%, Cadenhead, Small Batch, 648 bottles) Four stars and a half
Why so young? Well, this was actually one puncheon that’s been re-racked into two 1st fill sherry hogsheads in 2017, both seemingly re-married when disgorged this year. Ah, nothing beats family life! Colour: straw. Nose: fresh milk and butter, a little mustard and dry Madeira wine, fresh walnuts, iodine and aspirin, bandages, tapioca… I find this extremely intriguing, but first fill sherry, really? Was it fino? With water: maize bread, mustard, and natural wine! (macerated whites). Mouth (neat): some funny little beast for sure. Same flavours, more or less, mustard, cinchona, walnuts, chalk, prickly pears, artichokes, some salt… Wait, manzanilla? With water: some flavours, more or less, with in addition, just both a little sweetness and a little pepper. Finish: long like a great fino by Equipo Navazos. Just opened a Bota 54 de Fino the other day, pristine fino! Pepper in the aftertaste. Comments: this funny baby destroyed its official counterpart, I’m afraid. Sadly, I love this bone-dry style of whisky, and here we have more proof that in certain cases, excellence knows no age. What a great little whisky by Cadenhead!
