white pepper, barley sugars, tinned peaches, vanilla, tobacco, quite a nice young fruity profile, very pleasant

Lightly sweet and well integrated. Notes of tropical fruit, vanilla, wildflowers, honey and some spices. Very nice Glen Elgin.

[April, 2021] A quick review of a small sample from an US market only release...

...which matured in a rather exhausted cask which did not really support the aging of the spirit. Such casks are excellent for very long maturations (more than 30 years) so why the hell they bottled this at 12 years with a pre-mature profile? The whisky world goes crazy, it seems.
    • Nose
      83 83
The colour is very pale at white wine and the nose offers a profile which smells much younger than 12 years, in a blind setting I would have guessed a pre-mature dram around 7-8 years max. The trademark Glen Elgin fruitiness is already there but still the mashy young spirit's barley notes dominate. This was a rather inactive (leached) cask it seems, which the very pale colour indicates too.
    • Taste
      85 85
The taste is very simple but delicious on exotic fruits, barley sugars and some spices. Not a lot to discover in there but it is easy to drink. Still I would not guess a 12-years old dram but it is not an under-aged taste, at least. Water turns both nose and taste punchier without releasing new impressions, this dram swims like a flat iron.
    • Finish
      83 83
The dram arrives a little hot and coating on the palate with a minor bitter mouthfeel (metallic). The finish is medium to long and stays as simple as the taste. No new impressions are added except for a slightly bitter aftertaste. Now this dram is back at its pre-mature profile.

Nice, powerful and fruity dram, a lot of orange and other citrus fruits, very pleasant whisky for sure.

Very fruity, citrus, very floral as well. Quite some alcohol, peach, orange. Full scent. Also some whiffs of menthol.
    • Taste
      88 88
Quite some power, pepper, very fruity, orange, citrus, honey, malty. Very full body.
    • Finish
      87 87
Still quite some power, fruity, citrus, a little bit of bitterness, orange zest. Pretty long.

Very round and fruity mid-aged Glen Elgin Archives for the American market. If Clynelish waxiness is your thing, get a bottle! Excellent bourbon barrel pick by the lads of Whiskybase. Quaffable and affordable at the same time.
    • Nose
As always with Glen Elgin lots of fruitiness of yellow apples, mango and gooseberries. Also Galia melons, peaches and yellow prunes. Floral notes of cut grass and elderflower. Lemon-green tea. Also a hint of sunflower oil and chalk. It's not that complex, but its very nice.
    • Taste
Wow tropical fruit bowl punch now!. I got pineapple cubes, apricot and tinned Del Monte bananas. Followed with citrus fruit of kiwi, lemon and lime. Bergamot. Later on more on cake mix, custard powder and a clover-honey. At the background hints of toasted oak and aniseed. It's all quite waxy.
    • Finish
Long and sweet with lots of vanilla. Cinnamon and a little clove. Toffee at the end. Simple but very well balanced whisky.
