    Nose
It starts with a smoky burned hay, with soft light sweet peat, rich herbal notes, some vanilla, floral, sherry notes. With a little water added, the sherry flavours are emphasized, bringing out some ripe orchard fruits, honey, and citrus, while the smokiness becomes soft and sweet.

    Palate
The peat exceeds my expectation and is a little thicker than the traditional peat level of the Highland Park, with a sweet smokiness followed by some dried fruit, honey, floral notes, and oak. With a little water added, the sweetness becomes more distinct, with some ripe apple and caramel.

    Finish
Medium; the green apple and dried fruit sensations remain, interspersed with soft sweet minerals and light smoke, with some floral and malty sweetness still lingering.

  3. Ringstone scored this whisky 86 points Expert Junior

Very classic Scotch malt whisky. Due to the refill sherry casks, the young age and the 50% peated malt, pleasant smoky notes emerge.

    Highland Park Valfather 47%.

    Sampled at home Nov 2021.

    Pale golden yellow.

Aroma is poor for me. Very musty, furniture polish, faint impression of sulphur, meaty. Polished silver and pork. Hmm.

Taste is minerally, chalky, dusty, salt. Subtle touch of smoke. Not too bad in the mouth. Not spiky at all. Just subtle and easy but quite light in character.

OK stuff. Grew on me and just about redeemed itself after a poor first impression. 3.4/81

    • Taste

    • Finish
Floral smoke, tropical fruit and black pepper

Pretty meh overall. Not as good as Valkyrie or Valknut for me. Both of those just have more going on.
    • Nose
Slightly sour fruity peat. Lots of green apples, some mild honey, and light caramel. Plenty of autumn leaves and heather. There’s certainly a good amount of smoke here, though nothing like real heavily-peated malt. Some slightly ashy wood smoke, then smoked salmon, then the particular spiced and caramelized flavour of smoked pork. Some marzipan and Scottish oat cakes.
    • Taste
Fairly light texture. Only slightly sweet on the arrival, with lots of green plants, herbs (particularly basil), and light peat. It gets ashier, as more green wood smoke comes in, along with iodine and more basil. Honey sweetness shines through, and there’s a salted butter note on the back end.
    • Finish
Medium-short. The green apples return here, along with basil, and honey. Lingering ash and iodine. Some lime and challah bread.

  13. WhiskyShaman scored this whisky 68 points Expert Senior

An almost perfectly serviceable, if underpowered dram that was laid low by the sickly, cloying sweetness. Also the overmarketed Viking bollocks all over this, did not endear. Ugh.
    • Nose
      75 75
Delicate, flowering heather is scaffold for more forward fermented Pu Erh tea, transitioning into a rounded, gentle peat, with straw and stables. More savoury meatiness of salted and smoked pork is accompanied with a little side of sharp and sweet apple sauce.
    • Taste
      74 74
Sweetish and tart red-currant arrival, that gets sweeter with ripe pear and some herbal tarragon, punctuated by minor black pepper warmth, before drying out and moving on to iodine.
    • Finish
      56 56
The sweetness from the palate is now unmasked as stevia and taints the emerging salted butter (but without the texture) and minor smoke tail with its artificiality and doesn't budge

Meh - not sure how you'd say it in Norse, but it puts little effort in.

    • Nose
The nose starts with that typical highland park peat. Floral, sherry and a nutty scent. Obvious walnut and dried fruit. As the whisky opens in the glass it becomes clear that the peat is slightly more powerful than I am used to from a highland park.
    • Taste
      I take
the first sip and so hey! That's a whole bucket more peat than I expected. For a moment I was taken aback by it, but I pick myself up again and take another sip to explore the whisky further. The whisky is nicely balanced with the nose. Has a pepper, soft sherry influences, floral, plums, raisins, dried fruit but also certainly fresh fruit such as an apple and a pear and a wood taste. Yet something strange happens in my mouth with this whisky… the whisky starts out greasy but suddenly turns into an incredibly dry mouthfeel. Very special. But very welcome.
    • Finish
The finish has lots of pepper, some oiliness, nuts and that earthy peat.

Spices from the barrels dominate. Also some smoke, sherry and sweetness. Spices and alcohol give a good punch, which I like.

Definitely the weakest in this series. I find it difficult to build a pleasant world of pleasure - something bothers me. Inactive barrels take their toll. Not that complex either. Nothing bad, but for the price? (83/100)

The whisky has 47% alcohol and has a gold color with a small amber
    touch in it.

The nose starts with that typical highland park peat. Floral, sherry and a nutty scent. Clear walnut and dried fruit. As the whisky opens in the glass it becomes clear that the peat is slightly more powerful than I am used to from a highland park.

    I take

The whisky is nicely balanced with the nose. Has a pepper, soft sherry influences, floral, plums, raisins, dried fruit but certainly also fresh fruit such as an apple and a pear and a woody taste. Still, something strange happens in my mouth with this whisky ... the whisky starts greasy but suddenly turns into an incredibly dry mouthfeel. Very special. But very welcome.

The aftertaste has a lot of pepper, some greasiness, nuts and that earthy peat.

pretty peaty for HP, not bad, not great... Enjoyable, nice ABV, seems uncoloured, only thing missing is an age statement... ?

  34. 2ndSip scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

The smoke stays in my nose and I totally miss the taste - but should not be seen as a point of criticism. Those who have respect for smoky whiskys can confidently access them here: the smoke is minimal here.
    • Nose
      84 84
first a very light (sweet) smoke note, which has something of the HP typical heather in the beginning. Later I also find charred wood / charcoal (from the tasting notes: roasted cedarwood; well, with imagination) [as if you had made a wood campfire and then thrown in heather]. Behind it are apple and pear as light fruits as well as some vanilla and a little citrus-like (sour lime). All in all balanced between sour and sweet notes together with a light campfire smoke.
    • Taste
      84 84
very soft and sweet at the start. The wort builds up nicely and is distributed in the mouth. Gets drier out the back and something covers the tongue. I don't find a smoke note at all. On the second sip, more vanilla and spices (nutmeg / pepper). The oak aroma is there, but somehow restrained. Overall very warm in the throat. Interesting.
    • Finish
      81 81
relatively short to medium-long aftertaste with spice and oak aroma. Some smoke (dry campfire character) appears very late. Is getting drier, but pleasant.

Another Highland Park, the smoke is in the foreground.

Thanks to ronnholt for this sample.
Around what I've come to expect from a NAS HP.
Not too complex, but somehow saved by being bottled at a higher ABV which delivers the flavours favourably.
    • Nose
      83 83
Compaired to the 10 and 12 there is a little more smoke, more peaty. It's also a bit sweeter on the sherry.
Other than that, the usual HP notes; apple, citrus, heather honey.
It's got both similarities and slight differences from the core range, almost like a mix of 10 & 18.
A bit too much alc up front, but then it's at a decent 47% so I'm not complaining.
    • Taste
      87 87
Starts of with a sweet and very nice rich caramel chocolate in combination with red fruits.
Initially not much smoke, but it emerges midway as it gets a bit dryer. However I wouldn't call it peaty.
    • Finish
      82 82

Restrained odor. Slight sherry influence (seasoned american oak with olorosso for 2 year). Very subtle smoke in the background (Most smoky Highland Park?)
    • Taste
      86 86
More balanced. Smokiness starts by coming up with more power and starts playing with the sweetness and fruitiness.
    • Finish
      85 85
Well balanced now. Smokiness is and remains present, but drops back into the background a bit more. The best of the three in this series.

Quite strong peat for a HP. Vanilla pods, burnt wood & some dry sweetness. Pears, apples if I may add. On the palate, the peat isn’t as strong. A lot of oakiness (reused casks) and mild bitterness. A peppery note. Apples & Creme Brulee. A touch of coastal salineness almost reminding a Bunnahabhain 12. I loved the finish. Medium long if I may say. Burnt wood, pepperiness and a bit of gentle fruitiness. This HP is not muted. It is not subtle but bustling with flavours. It lacks the classic bourbon cask HP taste but definitely a nice attempt. The bottle and the pack have exceptional art work.

Too one-dimensional, too strong unbound oak, too little smoke for what was announced. Probably multi-used barrels, which have given in the end only bitterness.
