Modern sherry bomb. A clean and sherry forward Benrinnes, that is easy drinking for the abv. The meaty Benrinnes spirit is not here, it’s rather light and slightly floral. A big change from past Benrinnes I’ve had. Not a complex malt, but very quaffable. Thanks to my friend Dougaf for the sample!

Juicy wet sherry, leans toward Oloroso dryness. It does have a spirity side as well with grainy vanilla and white pepper. Orange, strawberries and chocolate syrup. Bay leaf and powdered ginger.

Red licorice, juicy, not the typical hefty Benrinnes spirit found, easy drinking for the abv. It definitely has a soda feel to it, Dr Pepper or root beer. It’s a pleasant thing even if slightly artificial.

Sweet and dry at the same time, twizzlers, chocolate syrup,. Spice builds and then fades quickly, that would be white pepper, powdered ginger, clove. It’s all very easy.

Benrinnes, you’re built for things I love. Up until the early 2000’s you were a big meaty style. I wanted to like you, but we never connected the way I hoped. Now we’ve crossed again on the this sherry bomb, but with your newer light floral spirit character. But aged in a first fill (European?) oak sherry cask - I’m excited and anxious all at once.

This isn’t necessarily a classic massive sherry bomb, regardless of what the whisky colour may have you hoping for. However, this is a classic ‘modern’ sherry cask at its best - devoid of sulphur and complimenting (not completely overpowering) the spirit.

Easy drinking, and gone too soon.

Fruity. Sugar roasted carrots. Vanilla. A hot cup of earl grey tea with cream. Freshly picked tobacco. Freshly tanned leather.

Lighter mouthfeel. Dates. Diet Root bear. Round for the abv. Fresh chives in butter. Vanilla bean Brûlée.

Sherried. Low sodium bacon. White chocolate covered underripe strawberries in February. medium-long finish.

N: Most wine-like at times with dark soft berries snatching the headline.
T: More berry action with waxy barley following.
F: Yet more savoury barley grain and berry action. At the death, flour and moorishly-chewy sultanas.
C: A delicious Benrinnes from a cracking cask.

      Colour:
      Dark reddish brown

      Nose:
Starts with a lot of leather. In addition, a dark, boiled berry aroma. Sour plums, sour cherries and a dry hazelnut. There's something very special inside. Smells a little like assembly foam. Musty wood and a trace of bitumen. I'll leave something there…
With a little time in the glass, the colleague looks drier. Now smells of damp hay and herbs come through nicely. Has something of rosemary. But there is something else… a smell that arises when you flex iron. Strangely, a little cocoa.
    • Taste
In the peppery start, plums are also immediately present. The berries are much lighter in taste. Rather raspberries and red currants. Appear fresher in taste. A little liquorice and a dry note of grass. Here, too, something metallic in taste. It tastes a bit like dry blood. Almonds and espresso. The alcohol is already making itself felt here.
    • Finish
Rather long and bitter. Espresso, men's chocolate and a dry berry aroma.
