As this is the first distillery bottling of Bunna with a port pipe finish, and I am a huge fan of both Bunna and port pipe finishes, my expectations were sky high. Bunna definitely delivered, absolutely stellar stuff!!

Wow! Really Bunna up front with nutiness, honey, vanilla and some brine. Then the port takes over. Blackcurrants, raspberry yoghurt gummy candy, rose water perfume. Really nice, a very inviting fresh sweet nose with a little alcohol burn ( but not unpleasantly sharp) and some slight waxiness. After a while, the nuts, brine and blackcurrant take the front and the nose becomes absolutely spectacular.

This is Bunna alright! What a rush. The alcohol bite is definitely there amongst lots of roasted nuts and spices (nutmeg, cardamon, clove). Dark berries, the blackcurrant comes back. Pretty fantastic, the port pipe shines through really nicely while the Bunna malt character keeps the lead role. With time, the spices become more leading and the dram becomes absolutely mouthfilling.

Warming, red fruitiness (really port like) and slight brine and toasted almonds make for a great long (slightly dry) aftermath. Great stuff. After some time, the aftertaste becomes creamier with more maltiness and some dark chocolate and becomes even better!

All that glitters is not gold.' This could be the motto here or something similar.

I was very curious about the Port Bunna after the numerous 90+ ratings in the Whiskybase and now I am very disappointed.

Tastes are different, no question. but you have to be a real fan of bitterness, if you can get excited about this Bunna. So Single Cask UA may like to go through something but as an original bottling? Does not really match my taste, it lacks balance or at least a counterpoint to the unexpected bitterness. It becomes a bit more harmonious with water. But still not really inspiring. If he gets much better with air? It was to be desired, after all, the bottle was freshly uncorked here.

I do not want to think about the PLV, at least with the current basic prices.

Usually I save comments on malts below 86 points. But here I am very aware of an exception, simply because I was so unpleasantly surprised. I will save further notes at this point anyway.

Thanks to the Whiskyhort Oberhausen for the opportunity to try this current Bunnahabhain extensively.

On the nose; oof, that's alot of mustiness. This fades but doesn't disappear after letting it sit for a while. Not a bad trait per sé, although it covers a lot of the other aspects. Apple, blueberry, orange juice, raisin, coconut, white grape and rose water. A good comeback with some nice and fresh fruity notes. Then jaffa cake, marzipan, fudge, brown sugar, Graham cracker and a winey note. Further on that mustiness which could be described as dunnage funk, creamy malt, ginger, nutmeg, wax, walnut and salted peanut. Maybe a hint of cheese. The port is nicely integrated and not too much, as it's such a sweet and intimidating wine the place in the backseat fits it well. In the mouth, a slightly bitter and overly sweet arrival. Here's where the port did a little too much, I think. Almost the same as the nose (without that mustiness) but cloyingly sweet to the point it gets artificial. Not my thing.
Finish is pretty good. Medium in length and not too sweet. Some malt, chocolate and almond.

That was a difficult one to score. Unique, yes. Convincing? No. Whiskies with an additional finish are not for me. So far..
Perhaps one of those bottles that keep evolving, I will never know.

Extremely bitter port, like bile. A suspect of cask gone rotten or extreme heat applied to exterior.

Edit: 85 after weeks of opening up. The bitterness is minimal and the finishing is more softer.
