Whisky Reviews for Longrow 1987 Sa

[March, 2005]  I had this dram during a MaRa rarities tasting at Limburg.

    In
my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50
    - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 92,5.
My notes state a malty, sweet and smokey profile.  The body is rich and fat.

Peat smoke, quite strong, even for Longrow, burnt wood. I keep on wanting some fruits to come out to play, but they were shy. A bit young. Spicy and peppery. With water, there's a bit of resemblance to an austere 20-something year old Port Ellen, which I guess ain't too bad. But still, I expected a bit more from this Samaroli. No need to pay up for this. There are plenty of single cask Springbanks that are better than this and cheaper.

This whisky hade a dry cork that might have hade an impact on the taste.

Nice mellow smell, very little smoke. Sweet initial taste with no sharp edges, typical Longrow 1987 quality.

Finish is short and lacks smokiness, might be from the dry cork ?

I hade higher expectations on this one and it started fine but the short finish was a disappointment.

nose: like nosing an older laproaig (distinguished peat), sweet and some brora hay notes

taste: salt, smoke, citrus notes and lots of pepper in the aftertaste

    overall: very good
