  1. Lorion scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

As I age, there seem to be roughly two choices when it comes to bourbon cask aging. Either the whisky becomes rounder, sweeter, creamier, finer. Or he's getting more and more stubborn. This one is an example of the latter. Sometimes I like that, but I have to be in shape for it. 80 points.
    • Nose
A bourbon cask that has given up plenty of oak. Spicy vanilla, dry straw, an intense oak. sparkling citrus notes.
    • Taste
Spicy oak dominates here, behind which lies the smoothness that I would like more of: lemon zest, vanilla, a hint of honey.
    • Finish
      Medium length, rather dry.

  6. Tangtang_WhiskyYoda scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

very tasty light-fruity standard, very soft and light-fruity. It's a shame that he was hired
    • Nose
lots of light fruits, slightly spicy, somewhat sweet and malty, herbs and light floral notes, very soft nose
    • Taste
light fruits, some honey, sweetish, slightly spicy, slightly nutty, a little malt in the background
    • Finish
spicy, lots of light fruits, herbs and malt. Oak, slightly bitter on the tongue, quite a long fruity finish

  7. Totoro scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Very spicy and zesty-sour, with a good oily touch from the wood. No-frills, classy stuff sourced from excellent casks. Too bad this was phased out.

From a 16-year release, I expected more. Whisky is easy to drink, but leaves you indifferent.
    • Nose
At first, notes of mowed grass, gray bread, pepper, salt are felt. In the background are old skin, dry planks, prunes, lemon peel.
    • Taste
Watery, slightly alcoholic, apple, slightly salty, with tones of gooseberries, tree bark and honey.
    • Finish
Medium, viscous, slightly doubled. Shades of honey from taste turn into an aftertaste and become much more noticeable. Along with the obsessive tanyas, echoes of malt, roasted chestnuts, citric acid and spicy spices are felt.

  12. Falnor scored this whisky 77 points Connoisseur

A good step up from the 12 year old, but it lacks the complexity I hoped it would have.
    • Nose
Light entry on yellow fruit, honey sweetness followed by vanilla and some caramel. Some lemon, apple and orange. So this describes just and about the bilk of bourbon riped whisky.
    • Taste
Citrus fruit and vanilla. Very straightforward focused whisky without that much happening to it. Again some honey and a little ginger. Not too much oak, feels younger than it is.
    • Finish
Also in the end it stays fresh, fruity and emphasis on apple and caramel

    • Nose
Apple, citrus, lemons, acidity, mint freshness, dough
    • Taste
Apple juice, lemony cake frosting, puff pastry, basically apple pie
    • Finish
Astringent, furry on the tongue, oaky, vanilla, nutty (hazelnut?)

well, after the 1998 this seems almost a bit thin, still very good because of its mouthwatering freshness.

for sure it´s better than 84/100 from my last reviewgo up two points
    • Nose
cannot believe my previous rating (84) as I always enjoy this whisky very much. perhaps a bad day? so let´s do it again!after just having had the 1998, it smells almost a bit thin. less malty by any means. but it´s very fresh on bourbon fruits and grass. apples and pears , maybe a touch of peaches and apricots. ginger, hints of vanilla and if you search for them you may also find some almonds.
    • Taste
nice fresh fruitiness and vanilla. grassy notes and ultralight honey
    • Finish
      medium, grassy, fresh

    Class!
    • Nose
Relatively bright color, fresh, fruity, very soft at the beginning,
    • Taste
then - slightly delayed - the turbo sets in, violently in the draft, my tongue is a little furry, but the taste is very good, round, harmonious. Nothing bothers, oak, malt, honey. Vanilla is now easily added, a little nut, or rather marzipan. He would also taste good to my wife.

Four An Cnoc’s by the sea include the ‘Cutter’ WB, 12yo WB, 16yo WB and the 22yo WB
C: Compared to the very good 12yo WB the 16yo is the same but more of the same, no doubt helped by a greater strength compared to the 12yo's abv minimum - come on Inverhouse, this isn’t mass-supermarket whisky. Also, there's a step up in terms of its depth and more full bodied presence. Scores a mark higher than the 12yo.  Let’s conclude with the 22yo WB

    Scores a B-

    Colour; Honey-Gold

Nose: Fruity, also floral, still quite light, but much richer than the AnCnoc 12 y. A little vanilla, cereals

    Taste: Barley, vanilla, fruit

Finish: good length, cereals, woody, nutty, still fruity

    Bottle: nothing special

    Richer than AnCnoc 12 y.

Definitely a young whisky. As good as no oak, the alcohol is also quite present. In addition, he is very one-dimensional, I'm missing something here. Hardly any complexity. Think so synonymous rather cheap.

As part of a blind tasting tried ... How to be fooled ...
    • Nose
tingling alcohol, citrus, vanilla, cream, a little bit bready, honeydew melons
    • Taste
some malt, vanilla, lemon, warming, at the end a touch of oak, barely noticeable.
    • Finish
The vanilla and some malt remain. The citrus freshness fades slowly

  25. Dre73 scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

A fruity and sweet whisky, with a reasonably spicy edge. Addition of some water only had an effect on the smell.
    • Nose
light, sweet, fruity, plums, pears. I smell a bit of tobacco too. And vanilla. after adding water, the sweet, vanilla predominated in the fragrance.
    • Taste
Some sharp, peppery, powerful, warm. But also sweet, tones of milk chocolate. And some citrus fruit.
    • Finish
Medium, sharp, peppery, somewhat dry, spicy, but also some citrus fruit.

  27. rottendon scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Is now not the high-flyer, but makes a lot of fun. Sweet, without junk and not too young. Notes from a blind tasting.
    • Nose
Caramel and herbs immediately. No alcoholic pricks. Ripe, juicy yellow fruits after some time. A very clear, strong and clean nose. Does not heat up a difference, something fresher perhaps. The second time more cereal.
    • Taste
Alcohol nasty, taste pretty interesting. The alcohol is a straw fire that flares up for a moment and then retreats immediately. Fruit salad in the taste, honey-sweetened, but not really sweet. The second time I found it tastier even more ethanolic, but not so strong.
    • Finish
The sweetness goes fast, light acid stays a little longer, barely bitter notes are present.

  30. Gloin scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

Too bad that the alcohol in the beginning in the nose has something disturbing, in the mouth knows the whisky to please, even if it is not very complex. Very good to drink, although nothing extraordinary, but especially in the second sip very tasty. The whisky wins enormously, if you give it time in the glass.

    blind tasting
    • Nose
It starts with a slight, sharp alcohol, followed by vanilla. Then immediately comes malt and lemon, a bit further in the background apple, the alcohol note is weaker. Some breathing is good for the whisky.
    • Taste
A very soft body and the slight alcohol in the nose, the start is surprisingly gentle, slightly astringent, sulfur notes, otherwise dominate vanilla and malt, hardly oak, the citrus notes are missing. In the second sip he gets much better, sweeter, the vanilla comes out stronger, everything gets rounder.
    • Finish
A quiet gentle finish, a little oak, cereals, a touch of grapefruit, not very long

  31. spigray scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

n: a delicate, grassy begin, vanilla, porridge, oak.
        unripe pears and yellow plums.
smells younger and it is a little one-dimensional.
t:  juicy mouthfeel, much on malt, cereals, a few nuts, quite some vanilla,
        gentle honey aroma.
same fruits as on the nose.
f:  medium to long, grassy, clean
comments: freshness is the keyword. good summer´s malt, lacks a bit of depth
                      and ooomph.

This whisky needs some getting used to. It is complex in how you should approach it. Time and water are the trick. At least 15 minutes in the glass, without a cover and no touching. Then nosing and tasting, while adding water in small quantities. Nevertheless, it can take water very well. It is not my favourite, but it is of exceptional good quality, very special and challenging. Experienced drinkers should try this; it compares to no other whisky than itself.
    • Nose
w/o water - Light. floral sweetness. Green herbs. Hint of incense.
w/ water - much heavier. Fruity sweetness; banana, peaches, oranges.
    • Taste
w/o water - gentle arrival. Development of sweet lemon, warm, extreme sweetness to bitter lemon. Remarkable development!
w/ water - sweet arrival. Gentle development of sweetness toward biter citrus fruits. Surprisingly cool.
    • Finish
Long finish of citrus fruits, sweet, spicy and hint of liquorice.

  34. St. Pauli scored this whisky 82 points Connoisseur

A decent but not too complex dram. Easily drinkable
    • Nose
A little waxy, with cereals, vanilla and a little fruit (pear)
    • Taste
Medium bodied, a little thin. It evaluates from the fruit more towards vanilla and coconut.
    • Finish
Moderate and pleasant, not bitter at all, in which the taste is prolonged.

a significant jump in quality compared to the 12yo That's fun!
    • Nose
a huge leap compared to the 12yo
      Vanilla and ripe mirabelle
roasted malt, honey and floral notes
No freshly cut grass, but no hay ... somewhere in between
a little influence from the barrel is also spreading
    • Taste
strong start, even slight biting at the tip of the tongue
      then sweet, incredibly sweet, honey
      paired with soft-melting chocolate
      in the end again dry
    • Finish
Sweet and oak a great back and forth

  36. Defeatless scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

nose: Sweet marshmellows. Citrus, vanilla and a hint of oak. Classic example of properly medium-aged bourbon wood.

initial taste: hint of citrus and ginger. some caramel and oakiness. again a classic example of medium-aged bourbon wood whisky.

Body: medium-full. a little oily which is a good thing!

Finish: medium: hint of malt, citrus and vanilla

Price: quite ok, lets say medium priced.

Presentation: Lots of blablabla. But they are right, it's a ereryday whisky of proper quality.

A good dram indeed, need more than one to make a fair assessment. A lot of citrus is what I recognized this time.

    (Rating interval 84-87)
    • Nose
A floral citrus dominate the first impression followed by oak and soft pepper. I had expected much more complexity on the nose.
    • Taste
lemon rind, sharp pepper and intense citrus that stays with you for a while. A combination of unripe Granny Smith apples and dry apples is also there. Assorted nuts? Maybe, the complexity definitely appears on the palate.
    • Finish
Medium in length and a lot of citrus lemonade and pepper in the finish.

    eye:
    straw, slightly gold
    nose:
sweet, honey and flower`s notes, sweet sugar fruits, some lemon candies, cookies strewed sugar powder. There are some creamy notes later.
    mouth:
sweet and fruity, some pear`s syrup, honey, hazelnuts, dried orange peel, hints of spice and bitter grass
    finish:
something like bitter dry grassy broth.
    Overall:
Equal and a little boring malt. It seems more young and simple than 16 years. On the over hand, the An Cnoc 16 has a great balance and pleasant bouquet.

  46. Collector57 scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

    Overall, I like this.
It just goes to show. This bottle is almost gone, and I often leave notes to near the end. But despite that, I still found something different today. I think I probably noticed all these characteristics before, but when I wrote the note, I wasn't getting them. To me it shows how the experience of a given malt can change day to day (presumably depending on a number of other factors)
    • Nose
Sweet crisp barley and some vanilla. A warm aroma
Some slight lemon in there (perhaps I'm less sensitive to citrus fruits though I've never noticed that before)
    • Taste
The barley and vanilla plus a little honey. A little bit waxy in texture (no beeswax in the flavour, to me)
Well, yes some citrus, but the re-taste really revealed that the palate has liquorice.
    • Finish
Gets more interesting here. The finish has some bitterness, but I find it quite juicy and there is a trace of, what, anise? Yes I think so.
On retaste the anise from yesterday is now pretty stong liquorice.
