Tamnavulin’s only official release – a NAS malt typically priced at around £32 in the UK, yet only €23 in Germany. Du glückspilz!

N: Tropical/detergent-y fruitiness becoming huskier with oily barley juice later on.
T: Light yet sharp/edgy and slightly anaemic to begin with. But wait! Soon we’ve creamy marzipan, white chocolate and [more] husky now sweet barley syrup.
F: That sweetness on the turn becomes more crystallised and confectionery towards the tail. Concludes with a funny sweet metallic/industrial creaminess.

C: Not too shabby. It’s easy to imagine the combination of price & curiosity will shift stocks. Hard to draw useful comparisons with the all-together-different Ben Bracken, aside from the 28yo shines brighter.

A cheap sherry whisky with 84 points rating in WB (as of 02/27/2020)? Unfortunately, it is not this one. However, there is a drinkable whisky with a noticeable sherry influence for around 23 €.
    • Nose
      81 81
Slight sweetness paired with subtle sherry tones.
There is also a hint of vanilla and a slight nuttiness.
    • Taste
      77 77
Milk chocolate, tannins with hints of fruit. Unfortunately he comes across a bit watery. Alcohol could also be better integrated.
    • Finish
      81 81
Somewhat better again: medium-long finish with notes of dark chocolate and nuts.

    RATING: 82pts – |80 – 82 (B-) → Okay| — No major flaws, worth tasting.
    • Nose
      83 83
The nose is simple but quite balanced and fruity with gentle hints of apricot jam, ripe plums, honey and raisins.
    • Taste
      82 82
The taste is sweet and fruity with pronounced notes of sherry followed by strawberry gum, assorted nuts and vanilla.
    • Finish
      81 81
The finish feels short to medium, slightly bitter, creamy
with a soft touch of caramel and dried apricots.

surprisingly appealing on the nose; if you like a sherry-tinged whisky that is not dominated by sherry, this is the right place and for the price (around € 25) you can't beat it, even if the taste / finish is a bit dry and short.
[85 - 81 = delicious --- get a second bottle if price is within the range]
    • Nose
the first thing that came up my nose were juicy (dark) red cherries, then caramel, honey, vanilla flavor. Overall, clear notes of sherry with red fruits.
Slightly spicy (nutmeg) and light, fresh wood (but not dominant!). If he could breathe a little, there was an aroma of banana and plum compote.
    • Taste
soft at first, but a certain (pleasant) spice and some oak quickly spreads. The vanilla aroma is now a little more memorable.
The red fruits fade into the background, but are still there. Tannins cover the tongue and it gets a little drier in the mouth (I like that).
    • Finish
maximum medium length; the spice with the fruit aromas lingers for a while, but then fades as you watch. A light malt note rounds off the whisky at the end.

Bats well above it's price point. Great nose but initially a little disappointing on the palet. However, put it over ice or with a little chilled water and the sherry noted come to life. If you can pick it up for below £25 then definitely give it a go.

Cheap whisky from the supermarket (colruyt), but I was intrigued by the specific mention of sherry barrels. As a big sherry fan, it's worth a try, I assumed. The whisky pours a fairly darkened ocer color. It even sais on the bottle it is colored. Why they still do this is a mystery to me. What's wrong with natural color ??? Scent is relatively mild. I get some vaniline, relatively agressive alcohol. Mild oak. Taste is fairly full, still rather agressive alcohol. Very recognizable sherry - which is a pleasant surprise. First up is the PX - it's sweetness, raisins, turning the whisky almost 'fleshy' in a way. Partly due to the PX, but more from what I assume is an Oloroso Cask, there's quite a bit of nuttyness as well. Not sure what the third barrel is, but I assume amontillado ? Anyway, beautifull sherry expression - exactly what I hoped for, but I didn't dare to expect. The whisky base itself seems a bit 'lost' almost , which is not as desireable, but than again, for this price I feel this is absolutely good value for money. Not recomended as a complex, couch-meditation-pickappart-whisky, but certainly nice as an afterwork 'refreshment'. Will absolutely buy again, as this might (by far) be my favorite value for money to date !

Sherry fruits with vanilla, oranges, bananas and spices.
    • Taste
Sherry fruit with vanilla, spices and oranges.
    • Finish
Long with spices, vanilla, citrus, floral notes and honey.

A good bang for your buck whisky that doesn't pretend to be anything fancier than it is. Very enjoyable, smooth and mellow.
    • Nose
      83 83
Sweet orange on the nose. Mixed sweet citrus fruits, cinnamon sugar, vanilla notes in the background, marzipan, not the most complex of noses but very enjoyable.
    • Taste
      84 84
The taste is mellow, creamy, honey, light sherry notes, sweet maltiness, slightly sour citrus notes.
    • Finish
      82 82
The finish turns more oaky, sherried and a bit spicy - nutmeg, cinnamon - and dries up.

  16. WhiskyRanked scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

The sweetness is very complex on the nose - bright crisp fruits, caramel, honey. A little cooling menthol & oak. The sweetness is largely absent on the palate. Instead there is dry oak, followed by light lemon zest and a long tobacco finish. Overall it is one of my best value whiskies!

    • Nose
      Colour:
Dark gold with a slight red cast

      Nose:
Starts out very waxy and sedate. Preserved light fruit aromas. Canned pineapple and a fresh note reminiscent of peppermint. Looks more tropical now. Lychee and kiwi. I’m going to let it stand ... there’s sure to be something else.
With a little time in the glass, there is some milk chocolate and a trace of wood floor wax. A bit of raspberries and woody spice join in. A delicate smoky note develops that plays around the whole thing.
It's really interesting how the colleague changes with more and more time. The tropical fruits become more sour. Plus more grain and a bit of block malt.
      I like it very much.
    • Taste
Soft start. Then comes a decent woody flavor. But the wax always remains. Partly tastes like a heavy red wine. Noticeably more berries on the palate. The nose hadn't given that away. Nutmeg, dry waffle and an earthy aftertaste develops. Partly like green bananas. Espresso bitterness and the associated roasted aromas. The chocolate is now more in the direction of block chocolate. Behind it a slightly bitter nuttiness.
    • Finish
Medium length. Waxy again. Subtle sweetness and pleasant woody bitterness. The espresso roasted aromas round off the finish nicely.

Simple, straightforward, entry-level sherry whisky. For those with a sweet tooth.
    • Nose
Prunes, raisins, burnt sugar and tobacco in the distance.
    • Taste
Caramel sweetness, dried fruits, rye bread.
    • Finish
Short, sweet, with a distinct sherry component, slightly peppery, caramel, at the end astringent, oak.

Nose with classic aromas of bourbon and sherry. Tasty, too, with no rough edges. Nothing to analyze deeply and long. But tasty. Exit quite short. I would have tasted it blindly. A no-brainer for 25 € and less.

Where do you find a good entry level malt for €20? Look no further: this Tamnavulin punches above its weight. Pleasantly surprised - good to see that a perfectly decent malt can be had for a very good price. Others should take note.
