It's fun to compare the old White Horse 16 with current bottlings ... a little different every year, always good, peat well involved and not as heady as Ardbeg and Laphi (that suits that, because I expect that). Just a good classic, of which I always have a few years open.

Russet colour. Not much left to desire with this one.
    • Nose
Intense, Walnuts, old rope, campfire, burning autumn leaves, incense, dark soy sauce, black vinegar, aged oloroso, salted almonds and peanuts, sugar beet syrup,
dried prunes, cool camphor and menthol, smoked salmon, black forest ham, earthy bark, baked apples, chocolate fudge, allspice, cinnamon.
Always a little sea spray in the back.
    • Taste
As intense and mouthcoating as whisky can get at 43%, with quite the peppery and minty punch on the arrival.
Smoked ham, salted nuts, sour plums, mushrooms cooked in oyster sauce, salmiak...
Incredibly earthy, rooty, salty, smokey... seamless marriage of huge dry sherry and rich peat. Just a hint of sweetness.
Much fruitier now aswell, with not only lemon and lime, but also currants, ripe cherries, sweet blueberries and some overripe banana.
    • Finish
Long, sooty, earthy tobacco, apple skins, gooseberries, fresh pu-erh tea, lightly caramelly and chocolatey.

N- Burnt leaf and tar smokes perfected with ripe fruit of banana, raisin, demarara and brandy soaked cherry. Milky and buttery with elegant lavender smokes nuance. Sweet fluffy cotton candy popping right at the end, simply superb. (94/23)

P- Lovely sweet malt with large dash of salts, puffy coastal smokes rising thru to the nose, approached by faded oak screams from distant. Rich, profound peat at back bone with well integrated chewy heats. (93/23)

F- Long, milky and waxy, sweet herbs, echoing exhaust smokes with spent matches and scents of shells. (93/23)

Body/Balance- 96/24. An high wire walker, how much more balance could you get?

Weighted Rate- 93pt, from a non Laga fan.

Well... a blast from the past is the only suitable description. It's heavy, not for those who don't like peated and medicinal whiskies. For those who like it: it's absolute quality.
    • Nose
A lot of brine, salty peat, some iodine, but also wood smoke, high end smoked salmon and coquilles Saint-Jacques. Menthol, licorice and lemon fight for the next rank, yet they remain equal to each other. Then, it's beautifully nutty on salted, oven roasted almonds, and soft vanillin of the oak. Finally, there is a dose of grass, along with orange. Orange infused sencha tea? In short: its very coastal, and complex.
    • Taste
Mildly sweet, but with a nice balance of sourish notes. It's a combo of brine, peat and lapsang souchong. Later: menthol, orange, fresh lemon and grass. Then, there is a full explosion of smoke, black pepper, lavender and orange. It gets rather dry, and heavy. Not for the faint hearted.
    • Finish
A blast of soot, smoke, even tar, medicinal peat, smoked salmon, various black and green teas, lemon, orange, licorice and black pepper. It's a crescendo arrival, as if you are to enter Mordor in order to throw the Ring into the fire.

    What a great dram!
    • Nose
A citric freshness and briny peat with sea air in the beginning, followed by grassy marmalade and sweet oranges.

Plenty of mineral notes are well interwoven with sea weed, lemony sweetness, old and smoked leather and an old boat.

Then comes a motor oil - cherry jam mix, scouring powder in an old barn and the peat is getting peppery, warm, wide and mellow and so giving space for many further aromas.

Some old smoked ham, iodine (also gauze bandage with Betaisodona), herbal sweetness of smoked caramel-malt and some dark chocolate. The cherry jam is smokey now and really present as well as some fruit brandies.

Mousse au chocolat with flambéed cherries and some old rum.

A leather armchair with old books and molten chocolate pralines on them and in the background is a glass with some cognac in front of the glowing fireplace.

Later hints of eau the cologne (old citrus notes), herbal black tea, old roof beams, burnt cake with coffee grounds, more salt, more maritime, hints of plum compote out of the old cellar.

Even later come pipe tobacco, Linzer-cake, hints of tar, smoked rum raisins, the playful fruit sweetness is getting 'old' and leathery, dark molten butter, coffee glaze, walnut liquor and rum truffles.

Again and again there are whiffs of pine tree forest with some resin. Salty smokiness and even hints of tropical fruits at some points.

Round - oily and smooth Islay character with a lot of deep sweetness - despite the strong peatiness extremely well interwoven - classic with an center of malt-chocolate-honey notes.
    • Taste
Sweet with old and herbal black tea, dark and smokey scouring powder, iodine, old car with motor oil, 'lighthouse', peat - deep and wide, citrus - old and sweet, jams, dark chocolate-leather, getting really mighty and fiery, heavy and aromatic billows of smoke, tobacco, burnt sea weed, old cellar, dark and oily brackish brine, coffee grounds, miso soup with lemon juice, smoky leather, walnut liquor, herbal sea air, some wax and cocoa powder, old wooden warehouse.

      Very long and intense.
    • Finish
Old casks (also Sherry casks) with smoked jams and chocolate pralines, brine, old barge, herbal teas, burnt sea weed, herbal citrus notes, spiciness from the wood, mighty peat smoke, iodine, wood, smoky leather with old raisins, scouring powder in an old cellar with something misteriously old in it (?).

Getting drier with a really great peat-complexity (lacking the words but it is a deep peat and wood play), very long ...

Old books, hints of French Brandy (resiny), deep smoked wood with some wax, cocoa powder.

      Very long and warm.
