[June, 2011]  Finally I emptied a bottle that I bought for 299 Deutschmark (153 Euro) in November, 1999 and opened in November 2002.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored it 80.  My notes state that it seemed to me as if the whisky improved a little bit in 2011 compared to 2000 (score 75 points) either due to oxydation or the mysterious "bottle maturation".  As this whisky was very harsh, unbalanced and literally fighting the wine flavours in 2000 it could be that after more than 10 years in an open bottle the whisky and wine finally married (at least somewhat).

If this process continued this might explain some of the better ratings that are done most recently...

[April, 2000]  I had this dram during a "Taste the difference" tasting at Rolandsbogen.

In my old rating system (ten scales that translate into WB points: 50 - 66 - 75 - 80 - 82,5 - 85 - 87,5 - 90 - 92,5 - 95) I scored this 75 points.  My notes state a very harsh, punchy nose and taste.  It feels as if the two flavour profiles of the Bowmore and the claret fight each other but nobody wins.  Very unbalanced and not enjoyable at all.  It improves a little bit with water.

    Wonderful enjoyable.
    • Nose
Very big. Lots of recognizable  claret-like fruit and cedar notes. And a powerful response from Bowmore smokiness.
    • Taste
      Yes: Bowmore beats Bordeaux.
    • Finish
Toffeeish, fruit fight back clearly, Oakyness. In the back saltiness. the distillery  notes dominates.

This limited edition Bowmore Claret introduced a totally new and
exciting Bowmore taste experience. To me, this experiment of fruity
sweetness and creamy smokiness went extremely well. A wonderfully
enjoyable dram with a superb balance between the finesse of French wine
and the punchy power of Islay. A real charmer!

    • Nose
Very aromatic on the nose with luscious red fruits, cherries and sweet
grapes, perfectly wrapped in gentle peat smoke. Lots of freshness with
lovely sweet notes of vanilla, gentle toffee and a hint of citric tang.
Subtle damped wood and a whiff of mint in the back. A really gorgeous
      nose and very appealing!
    • Taste
Sweet and fruity start on the palate with grapes, cherries and oranges.
This is immediately complemented by a massive load of warming spices -
pepper, cinnamon, oak and cloves. Sweet and creamy again with delicate
toffee, lovely mixed with a slightly herbal touch of tea and tender
ashes. Gentle peat smoke and hints of salty sea tand nicely linger
      towards the finish. Deliciously savoury!
    • Finish
The finish is long, warm, and sweet with a perfect mixture of grapes,
wine aroma, honey and raisins. Spicy notes of oak and cloves arrive,
nicely linger with gentle peat smoke, a whiff of herbal tea notes and
      sea salt on the tail.

WITH WATER: There's almost no change on the
nose with water. The fruitiness perfectly mingles with the Bowmore
smokiness. The fruitiness, however, slightly decreases on the palate,
while more bitter notes of orange peel and grape skins come to the fore.
The spiciness is a bit tamed but perfectly balanced with peat smoke and
tangy flavours. The finish is still long, warm with bitter orange peal
and tender cloves on the tail.

An uncommon pairing of Bowmore and Claret casks, using barrels from Suntory owned Bordeaux wineries to finish the whisky. A strange and uncommon release from Bowmore.
