Glen Elgin is one of those distilleries I haven’t really payed attention to yet. Until now.. since I bought a line up of 6 different Elgin’s in age, casktype and pricerange. So let’s discover this rather unfamiliar malt! First off; this 12yo
    • Nose
Oomph that’s is a classic Speyside nose! Very fresh but mature at the same time! Beyond it’s age if you ask me. A classic and uncomplicated Speyside nose with lots and lots of fresh fruitiness! A wave of orchard fruits like fresh & sweet apple, fully flavored pear and also some ‘darker’ fruits like peach. Vanilla, a fresh grassy/eucalyptus note and some woodspices. A whiff of charred oak is there as wel. This is an impressive nose, especially when taking it’s age in consideration!
    • Taste
On the palate it’s classic Speyside profile continues. Sweet and sour notes. It gives a little more citrus fruits here, which is supported by green apples and unripe pear. It remains soft and friendly all the way. Some bitterdry oak influences appear after a while but the whole fits very well together. I get some licorice as well.
    • Finish
In the medium length finish the oak influences are pleasantly present. Fresh oak, sawdust, honey, vanilla and again sweet fruits remain for quite some time.

This has been a very good starting point of my little Elgin journey. Looking forward to the next already!

I don't understand the low ratings, but maybe you really have to like this classical fruity woody bourbon maturation. It show great maturity for only 12 years old, I'm really enjoying this one, especially now that the bottle is about halfway through.

Tasting at the end of the bottle, a real favorite. A whisky certainly simple but miles away from other entry-level.
    • Nose
      Pear, perry cider, apples
    • Taste
Very oily, the oak is present from the start.
Much more focused on lively fruit than I have tasted from the distillery.
Lots of body for such a young malt.
    • Finish
On the white and flawless fruit.

Fresh and fruity whisky, a bit stronger and more powerful in the body than in the nose. Not too complex, but very pleasant.
    • Nose

Very fresh and fruity, a lot of citrus, very floral as well, vanilla cake. But it is pretty modest, no trace of alcohol, some caramel now.
    • Taste
      87 87
Pretty strong, some pepper, tingling. Fruity and sweet, orange, some honey, caramel again. In time things get smoother and softer.
    • Finish
      86 86
Still pretty strong, fruity, citrus, orange zest. Some honey as well. Middle long finish, Some tropical fruits now, and again some caramel.

I bought the same flight of samples as Cask1988. Glen Elgin, a distillery which is not on the usual route along the distilleries of Speyside. To check them out I bought a set of various Glen Elgin IB's to explore these guys.
    • Nose
      87 87
The fruity Speyside flavors jump out of the Glencairn straight into the nose: pears, apples and vanilla. Beautiful!
    • Taste
      87 87
A pallet of typical Speyside fruity, sweet, oily and waxy flavors waltzes through the mouth. Quite full body for the 46% abv.
    • Finish
      86 86
      Medium long and slightly bitter.

Conclusion: a pretty good first acquaintance with this for me unknown distillery.

    Schone van Boskoop

I recently hosted a tasting and instead of just handing out whisky, I was also handed a bag full of samples by one of the participant. Well, he’s invited to the next tasting for sure. One of those samples was this young Glen Elgin, recently bottled by The Nectar from Belgium. I was told this this was a refill sherry cask, but you would not be able to tell from the color, considering how pale it is.

Typical sweet nose with lots of European fruit like peach, gooseberries, Schone van Boskoop (a lovely apple) and pears. There is also some dried grass and a dandelion. Spring in my glass.

That continues nicely on the palate, albeit without the grassy notes. This is fruity and slowly evolves towards candy)like. Hard candy. Peach and apple up front, but pineapple cubes appear in the back.

The finish is somewhat short, but silky soft.

Lovely daily dram with a very friendly price tag. Thanks, Benny!
