Whisky Reviews for Blair Athol 2011 DL

This single cask bottling shows a delicate fruitiness, nicely mixed with chocolaty flavours and balanced by warm spices. A young whisky which isn't dominated by the sherry yet. For the sherry freaks, a few more years in the butt would have been even better. Anyway, this Blair Athol is a nice drinkable dram in a relaxing atmosphere.

    • Nose
The nose starts off with brittle, toffee and notes of sherry. This is followed by some fruits (strawberry), mocca and anise with a floral hint of violet in the back.
    • Taste
Rich, sweet and warming on the palate with lots of sherry, complex fruits (physalis) and white pepper spice. Becomes slightly dry towards the finish with a touch of bitter orange and oak.
    • Finish
The finish shows medium length with dark fruit jam, cocoa, allspice and slightly bitter notes of oak.

With water: Fresher on the nose when a few drops of water are added. Yellow fruits, mixed with ginger and cinnamon spice. Sweet and creamy on the palate with fruit jam and allspice, pepper and dry oak. Less warming. The finish is medium long with creamy fruit, citrus, ginger and cocoa.

If an independent bottler replenishes whisky at a young age, the question that always arises for me is: why is the cask bottled so early? And basically, I trust that the whisky, despite its young age, shows maturity and experience, so that you can let the "kid" alone.

However, the Blair Athol would not have hurt a few years more experience at all. I find him very edgy and unbalanced. The ideal 46% also have a strong alcoholic effect. The sherry barrel shows little. After the first sip and some time in the air, beautiful and distinct, but rather ex-bourbon barrel ripening develop typical vanilla notes. Rather unexpected and inappropriate, but a nice consolation prize. All in all, the craftsmanship is of course not bad, but bottled too early and in the overall ranking simply out of round and not harmonious.

The barrel would have had potential - why not leave it for a few more years and pump it instead at the age of 8 years on the market? Especially since Blair Athol over 12 years, not much on the market anyway ... Too bad!
