A very nice offering from the Lagavulin distillery. Quite complex, interesting and engaging malt overall. Nice bonfire smoke, honey sweetness and a killer roasted/salted peanuts note. I will be considering a rebuy, if the price will be right (under 55 Euro).

The Lagavulin distillery has been in existence for 200 years. This 8-year-old single malt was bottled for her anniversary. The age of eight is also reminiscent of another important milestone in the history of the distillery: Around 1880, the well-known whisky journalist Alfred Barnard tasted an 8-year-old Lagavulin during his visit.

Phew, ash fans will get their money's worth. For me, however, a standard that I don't necessarily need. But there are many of them and that's why we stick to one sample. Click here for a detailed review: https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2021/11/22/evolution-of-lagavulin/

A very beautiful young Islay warrior. Similarities with the Ardbeg 5y Wee Beastie cannot be denied. You shouldn't and shouldn't compare him with his older colleagues; that would not be fair to him. Without prejudice, the young Lagavulin is a good addition to the standard range. If you like having young smokers in your glass, you can't go wrong with it. A perfect companion on a cozy summer evening.
    • Nose
      87 87
The color that the young Lagavulin conjures up in the glass is rather a light straw yellow - very light. Behind the smoke you immediately find yourself at the sea, salty and a little iodine and seaweed. In addition, fruit aromas that are reminiscent of a ripe lemon with its zest. With a little time, the citrus note gets the support of a Nashi pear. At the very end, a few herbs such as thyme and wild oregano show up. A nice young Islay nose.
    • Taste
      86 86
Very oily appearance and a strong, almost tangy start in the mouth. The ashy smoke is immediately in the foreground here too. A pleasant combination of a not too strong sweetness together with the lemon and the spices from the nose follows the smoke. The marine association with salt and iodine can also still be tasted. The alcohol is very well integrated.
    • Finish
      86 86
Towards the end you can still see the smoke and peat that lingers in the mouth the longest. Add to that the sea breeze along with the lemon zest and the kitchen herbs. the finish, minus the smoke and peat taste, is rather medium-long.

Young, very fruity and sweet, pears, vanilla, flower, candy and ofcourse some peat. A little peppery in the finish. Not as complex as the 16 (or 12) but very pleasant.

Fresh and fruity to accompany an almost oily peat, lime, spices, it is quite young and less structured than the base of 16.
the peat is medicinal, powerful, a little soggy seaweed that barely comes out of the seawater.
sensation of heaviness in the mouth, citrus fruits very present, a little woody, salty, ham brine and peat which returns.
The finish is fairly monolithic average compared to the pleasant palate.

Not bad, but it falls off really well against its big brothers. You definitely notice in your 8 years. The 16 year old is available for the same price.

Recently came across this at a local shop and decided to pick it up. Weather is cold. Lagavulin is usually a dram I'll sip in this weather, so I thought I'd give it a try. Let's see how it tastes.

Nose starts with lemon juice, salt, cooked ham, and then gives aromas of coastal sea spray, and perhaps some wet cardboard.

Palate is fairly tame with lemon juice, then more cooked ham. Then some wet cardboard again.

Finishes with lemon pepper sauce, salt, some drying ash, and some oak.

N- Fresh and bright citrus, sweetened lemon juice. Ashy as well highly ester and relatable to some floral, also metallic side of rusty nails, salted meat and briny ham. Goes with some white breads, some sweet nut spreads, nutella? Evolved to exotic used fish tank, some weeds, hot sands, bit dirty but alluring. (91/22)

P- Oily lemon butter, or lemon butter sauce? Sourish smokes with tarry, umami exotic spicy sambal and solidly lasting with raw herbs and hefty salts. (88/22)

F- Medium long, big bonfire smokes, dry, citrus and spicy gingers. Warm you up like in a herbs sauna. (91/22)

NOSE: Sweet and earthy peat smoke, sweet bourbon barrel notes (banana, vanilla, dried coconut, dried yellow fruits), fat and oily notes (partly vegetal, partly kerosene). Water opens the nose up further and makes it fruitier. (89p)
TASTE: The arrival is a bit sharp; nippy and has an almost slight sparkling effect. On the mid palate there’s a lot of soot, even cigarette ashes, some sweet and oily herbs and some pepper. Water doesn’t do much for it, either way. (85p)
FINISH: The finish is more peppery and wood influenced, without much of the good Lagavulin notes. Water may have made the finish a tad sweeter. Fairly simple. (83p)
This is a far cry from the lovely, original 8 YO launched for Lagavulin’s bi-centenary in 2016. TOTAL SCORE 85 points.

Comment: simple, straightforward smoker, quite delicious, but not really exciting.
    • Nose
Nose: sweet camp fire smoke, looks greasy, and slightly salty / mineral, wet pebbles, and pine needles. Vanilla, powdered sugar, light apricots, a little orange.
    • Taste
Taste: strong onset, silky / light mouthfeel. Vanilla, powdered sugar, green apples. The smoke retains elegantly, even the oak rather behave.
    • Finish
Finish: short. Now comes the oak, milk coffee, white pepper, now suddenly strong smoke. Still vanilla and cotton candy.
