A nice waft of peat from the glass, accompanied by lemon, banana, vanilla, cured meat, barley sugar, toasted bread orchard fruits. Sweet and savoury to start with but quite bitter on the finish, which throws me a little. I don't mind bitterness in my whisky but this feels a little off kilter, almost West Coast IPA-like. Oily texture. It's rather tasty, but just slightly off-balance for me.

As soon as the bottle was opend, thickly peated tendrils escaped like the smell of cheese in a Tom and Jerry cartoon, dense with serano ham and pancetta. Underneath that, the ex Jim Bean back-bone of vanilla, and citric ginger just kind of hung out, like it has nothing to prove.

And it really didn't. That first sip, cemented everything it had to offer in a dense, creamy and zinging block of flavour, framed by that meaty and everpresent peat.

It just carried on going until finally petering out into a salty, honeyed menthol.

Easy to drink, but with personality.

Cured pork, umami, oily peat, vanilla-malt, lemon-ginger syrup, camphor

Confectionery sugar and tobacco leaf fumes. Lemon-ginger syrup mixed into whipped vanilla cream, with extra fresh grated and candied ginger. Porky peat.
    • Finish
      85 85
Prickly ginger, honey-butter, peat and camphor.

Nose: Cinnamon loaf, toasty oak, vanilla sponge and candied citrus with creamy malt and a whisper of peat smoke.

Palate: Apples and pears, slightly burnt toast and butter, more creamy vanilla and floral malt.

Finish: A gently spiced finish with lingering notes of bonfire smoke.

A gently peated English single malt, Gulliver's 47 is distilled in Norfolk by The English Whisky Company using Concerto barley grown in East Anglia. The whisky has been aged in bourbon casks from Jim Beam, which haven't been broken down and rebuilt. The brand is inspired by Samuel Gulliver (a real person, rather than the fictional explorer), who explored the world in pursuit of wines, spirits and liqueurs, and brought them back to 18th century Britain. Gulliver's 47 was then launched eight generations later by his descendant Stuart Gulliver, carrying on the legacy.
