    Decadent

Admit it, Glenury Royal sounds a lot less impressive than Brora or Port Ellen, but that did not stop Jim Beveridge to create a third expression in the so-called Ghost & Rare series. The Highlander Glenury Royal – one of only three distilleries allowed to add Royal to their name – closed in 1985 (and was demolished in 1992, now replaced by flats). The distillery was built in 1825 by Captain Robert Barclay who was also a parliamentarian. After a fierce fire, the distillery was resurrected – like a phoenix from its ashes, hence the logo on the luxurious box. Yes, I think it looks beautiful. Next to this malt, this release also contains Pittyvach and Cambus as ‘ghosts’ and the ‘rares’ are Glen Elgin, Inchgower, Glenlossie, Glenkinchie and Cameronbridge (grain). It is bottled at 43.8%. I felt the Brora edition was outstanding and the Port Ellen edition fantastic. I wonder if this Glenury Royal version comes close.

Wonderfully soft nose on apples, apricots, citrus, mango, pineapple (a mix of both fresh and dried), nuts, heather honey and vanilla. Lovely floral notes. A touch waxy too. An absolutely delicious nose.

The fruit certainly returns on the palate (now more juicy than dried, with apricots in the lead), but that is upholstered by notes of toffee, some nuts and butterscotch. Toffee apples kick in with a vengeance. Feisty op pepper. The wood takes care of a bitter note. Perfectly balanced.

The finish is soothing, long and makes you realise that Dr Beveridge has succeeded once again in creating a decadently deliciuos blend.

Look, Blue Label is already a great blend. But these Ghost & Rare releases are clearly in a league of their own. This is absolutely great stuff. My wife said ‘What?! 285 EUR for a blended whisky?’ Then I poured her a dram and she whispered ‘Pour me another one,’ while nodding affirmatively.

Quick hit review. Whisky calendar - Day 20.

My first thought was 'What a waste of Glenury Royal', but here we are with a sample of JW Blue Label. On the nose, I get honey-spiced oranges, nectarines and cinnamon, but it is hard to find any distinct flavors. Tastewise, the theme continues with sweet apricots, measured oak and hints of bitter chocolate. Nice balance. Fruity and spicy notes compete in the medium-length finish. It is a good blend, but certainly not at this price.

3rd edition after the Brora and Port Ellen series, that of Glenury Royal closing its doors in 1985, that was yesterday!
A remarkable blend that reassures me about the quality of these ''old'' distilleries with a big heart.

The aroma did not bode well, but the taste / finish pleasantly surprise with a harmonious combination of sweet-creamy and mineral notes, a varied palette, saturation and depth, the aroma slightly adds in development, but still it is he who remains the weak link here.

Open, dry, animal fat, fried vegetables, deep-frying oil, mineral notes - stone chips, plaster; dry boards, carpentry, candy notes, animal motifs, wool.
    • Taste

    • Finish
Spicy, warming, oak, tobacco, leather goods, candied orange fruits, a little ginger, toffee, light mineral-metallic notes, cola, salted caramel, dry medicinal herbs.

I had a sample of 5cl, which I tasted on two occasions within a week.
Nose: Very nice! Fragrant. Fruity. Sweet. Honey. Inviting.
Palate: Smooth. Sweet. Fruits. A touch of smoke. Mild. Velvety.
    Finish: Warm and nice.

This is nice! Perfect for drinking neat. I am looking forward to taste the Legendary Eight and the Rare & Ghost Port Ellen!

The nose wins. Fruity with apple, pear, apricot, honey, vanilla and butterscotch very tasty, very well integrated
Fruity notes alternating with pepper, harmoniously rounded dried fruits, dark chocolate, honey, some wax. Uncomplicated unfortunately less complex. Only partially confirms the fantastic nose. Still convincing.
Medium-long finish with a lot of dark chocolate, a bit leathery and chilli with oil.
Spicier than its little blue brother, but not necessarily more complex.

  14. wisekyofcourse scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

very pleasant nose with honey, crushed nuts, macerated fruit (undifferentiated in my opinion!), a little spicy
on the palate, it is very creamy, smooth, round, feeling of cake, sweetness, caramel, fruit more on pears and candied apricots, a little orange peel coated with icing sugar, woody back and a little leather
the finish is simple, with a vanilla meland, honey, nuts, candied fruit, it's simple, but it's very good actually.
    blend of high flight!
